We have had our MoneyDance program for 3 years now and really like it. Only one problem: we can't seem to get the budget program to work. Are there step-by-step instructions somewhere?

Many thanks,

Jeanne

Not a feature I use but have you had a look at the knowledge base articles on the topic:

Yes, thanks. I’ve pulled up the user guide and the info you sent.

If we run into more problems, I’ll contact you.

    Thanks for now!

I've messed around with budgeting and I have it working for me.
Here are the issues I found.
When you create the new budget, select the period as "Mixed Intervals (Old Style)
I found the old budget style is easier to manage and the budget amounts automatically extend to the future month unless you limit it.
Also be aware that you cannot budget transfers between accounts. I.E. Payment amounts to credit cards, loans, or mortgages. Earlier in the year MD still had that capability when using the "Old Style" budget, but for some reason they disabled it.
So you have to capture payments to related principle and interest which unfortunately changes at each payment. Hopefully MD will address this in the near future, but there are some work around's to allow you to budget account transfers. It's just a matter of creating some custom categories that the budget will pick up.
Here is a link to some discussion of how it can be done.

Jeanne, not wanting to put the cat amongst the pigeons. I would suggest the 'new' budgets intervals as they match how you might budget your business/accounts. There are a number of weaknesses in the MD budget features so I wrote a couple of extensions that help you create budget entries.

The main weakness for me was the ability to work out an annual budget and spread it across the months/weeks. With MD out of the box you have to work it out for yourself and then copy the amounts into each period.

Have a look at my Budget Generator that allows you to create a draft budget before pushing it into MD. I have also written a Budget Report extension that presents the budgets in a more readable format. See https://bitbucket.org/mikerb/moneydance-2015/wiki/Home and follow the link for Extensions.

Of course, the choice is yours but if you do not understand anything post a question and I am sure I or someone else can help.

Have tried to use Budget Generator but the extension locks up when I try to use it.I have read the detailed guide. Have I missed an obvious step. A parameter appeared in the box. Do I use that first time?

    Hi Derek

Thank you for putting the issue on Bitbucket. I have left a reply there.

    Hi Derek

First time through there maybe an odd name in the parameter field, clear this out and put a name that will be the name of your parameter file.
Then start to put your expense/income figures in. I suggest you enter a few values and then save so the parameter file is created.

I can make it work for expense values but it still freezes for income?
I have worked my way round as the number of values for income is small enough to do manually.
    Thanks
    Derek
