budget subcategories rolling up into parent categories

I'm looking for a way to get my subcategories in a budget to roll up into the parent category. For example, I'd like expenses in the healthcare subcategories dental, physiotherapy, and medication to all roll up into the parent category "healthcare". This way if I spend more on dental than I budgeted, but less on physiotherapy, it will be clear by looking at the parent category that I'm still within my overall budget for that category.

It seems this issue was discussed at some length in 2015/2016 in a thread titled "categories totalling subcategories". The discussion was closed on May 1st, 2017, however it isn't clear to me whether this feature has been added to Moneydance. Please let me know if there is any way to make my budget do this, and, if not, whether Moneydance intends to include this capacity in a future update.

    just a user,

The "budget" report does subtotal the parent category as you describe, but the budget feature itself does not. I haven't seen anything to indicate MD is looking to add that feature, but there is a work around similar to the one used to capture loan payments that will function the way you want. It's just a matter of creating a special category to capture all the activity and using that special category as your budget item. It's easy do do with reminders where you add the extra splits, but not so much if you don't use reminders to enter the activity.

Yes. Logically the budget subcategories should roll up into their parent categories. Currently I would like the budget summary bar at the top to match the output of the I&E report. Currently it does not because some of the subs don't roll up into the main categories. I may have to consolidate some categories to make this happen but would lose some of the reporting features, such as the interest from each individual banking account to see the actual income from that account.

The value of a parent Category, or Account, should show the total of its children and any transactions entered directly in the parent at all times in any MD function showing a parent value - period, it is just good accounting logic.

    just a user,

I think the problem relates to the parent category serving also as a standalone category itself. I think the programmer would have to exclude using any parent category as a standalone category to order for all features to work as expected for everyone.
