That's an interesting approach, but I think if you want to use the MD budget, you have to set up each expense you want to budget separately. Now without using a budget, you could set up a report and memorize it to easily look at a certain period to keep tabs on total expense and income. I see where you could get a bit creative to use reports as a way to follow cash flow and budgets. One issue with the MD budget tool is that they ignore loan/mortgage payments (if the loan/mortgage is also set up) in MD. MD sees that as a money transfer and ignores the payment activity. But there are work arounds and tricks to make that work for you if you are interested. I've been using MD (mixed interval) budgets for several years now with work arounds to pick up loan and mortgage payments and it works fine for me. I don't go crazy trying to budget every catergory so I budget the payments to my mortgage, credit cards, insurance payments, utility payments, cash withdrawals, property tax, car tags, charity, pension and soc sec payments, etc. I'm able to pay off my credit cards each month and the budget gives me a good idea of how I am managing my money vs my income. If I see a budget item start getting astray of my planning, I investigate my activity to see what is going on and adjust as needed. Recently the primary MD programmer has indicated that he is looking into updating the budget tool. The budget tool should let the user follow any type of money activity, not just strictly expense and income categories.

mhoggietag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476883942019-10-03T19:29:24Z2019-10-03T19:29:25ZInclude all accounts and categories in mixed interval budget

Thanks. That would be helpful. Not being able to base a budget (including loan principal payments) on the previous year and then make monthly adjustments is the one negative I have found for MD compared to Quicken.

Jan
