You need to have some kind of activity to follow for budgeting. So how are you saving money for the coat? Putting cash in an envelope? Transferring an amount from checking to savings? How are you going to put aside that money you want to budget.
Once you decide that, then just set the budget to follow that activity. Even though MD will not pick up account to account transfers, you can still add a special category to capture the activity which you will be able to track with your budget.

mhoggietag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484432512020-07-05T13:37:36Z2020-07-05T13:37:40ZBudgeting categories

Thanks for your reply. The monies will be budgeted for monthly over the 3yrs and stay in the account until a purchase is made which would be in 3yrs. the problem is that when you do the annual budget there isn't a way to show that the item goes over the annual budget and although no monies have been spent they are allocated but the category item shows under budget as the system assumes the item is an annual expense?

Edtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484432512020-07-05T13:50:47Z2020-07-05T13:50:47ZBudgeting categories

Just a user,
I think you must be using the default "new style" budget where I think you can accumulate budgeted amounts for a category. Is that the case ?

mhoggietag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484432512020-07-05T22:12:31Z2020-07-12T12:33:20ZBudgeting categories

I’m just getting set up and creating my first budgets, so I have been doing some reading.
You could perhaps roll over each months unspent budget until you reach your target?
See: https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/budgeting-2/the-newer-budget-...
This rollover applies to all categories so you would need to go back and amend those categories you did not want rolled over.
Otherwise it’s worth try using the Moneypie extension.

Kidglove57
