About the budget feature

After using MD for 10 years+, I decided to try the budget feature.
So, I create a MONTHLY budget. Now I'm staring at a list of categories by month where I see how much I spent last month, how much I spent this month so far, and next month is all 0s.
Two questions:
1. Are we supposed to manually enter category items, one month at a time (I can do that more efficiently in Excel)?
2. Why doesn't the budget get populated from the memorized transactions? it seems to me that would be the first thing a budget would pick up from.
Unless I'm missing something, I can't say I'm impressed with what I see.

I forgot to mention that I tried all three options under the month heading drop down list but I didn't see that it did anything.

    just a user,

You need to use the old style Mixed Interval period Budget. You choose the Period as Mixed Interval Old Style when you initially create the budget. It will allow you to set values one time that continues indefinitely or to a specific date. The default New Style budget has several issues which make it difficult to use like the one where you have to copy the budget every month going forward.
