    just a user,

You can't. MD ignores transactions between accounts for budgeting. What I do is create a special budgeting category for the loan payment and use a spit to also send the same payment to my special budgeting category. Then using another category I named NULL, I add that about back to my splits so the total is the correct total payment. That process allows you to budget the special budgeting category and also show the correct payment. But on a mortgage, you can't add extra spits to the principle interest payment. So what I do is add an additional reminder to put the total payment into a special category I created for mortgage payments.using NULL as my payment source. That also works. Many have complained about this issue but I think we are stuck with the current MD design related to transfers. Of course if you didn't have any loans registered in MD, then budget would pick up the activity because it would be a simple expense.

    Hello,

I find the budgeting tool to be really confusing. Here’s my question: where do I set the budget amount for a category, where is shows up in the expense (first number) of the monthly budget list? Thanks.

    just a user,

Don't use the default calendar budgeting tool. Too many issues.
Create your budget for Period Mixed Interval Old Style

Then click on that new budget on the side bar, then click Edit on the listing shown,
Populate as needed and click OK. Be aware that new entries will move around as you populate them so if you can't find one you are editing, scroll the list to find it listed alphabetically I attached a photo of the Mixed Interval Old Style edit screen.

Thanks. How do you get the categories to show when you click on Edit?

I can’t believe how bad this is.

    just a user,

Click the smalll + Plus sign on the bottom left of the Edit page and it will let you edit a new category, I set my interval to monthly (not prorated) It makes some of the budget reports better for me.

Can you budget out beyond this month, using the old method, if the category amounts will be changing?

    just a user,

Yes, you can set a start date and optional end date as needed.
If you have anything with a known future change, just create another duplicate budget for that category with a future start and end date as needed and put an end date on your old budget item. I do that when my health insurance changes each year. Any reports will see the date and amount changing in the future.
