Looking to finally switch form Quicken to Moneydance. Just trying to verify that I can download online from Amex credit cards, PNC bank (www.pnc.com) and eTrade for investment. Anyone out there using online banking in Moneydance for the above institutions? Anyone had any problems?

Thanks.

    Hi,

I'm not a customer of any of the institutions you listed, but I can tell you what I know right now from the support perspective.

AMEX seems to be working for most folks after a recent server update, though we have gotten reports of an error that we think we might have fixed in an upcoming build of Moneydance.

PNC transaction downloads seem to work fine. However, bill pay through PNC has been problematic for a while now and we haven't been able to track down and fix that bug. We're working on it though.

I don't recall any recently reported problems with ETrade off the top of my head.

Also, if you'd like to be sure that you can connect, go ahead and give the free trial a shot. The demo version is fully-functional and allows you to manually enter 100 transactions. Imported transactions are not limited. If you decide to purchase the program at a later date you can keep all your data, the license key simply unlocks the ability to manually enter more transactions. For more information on how to get the most out of your trial period, check out our blog post on the subject.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and thank you for your interest in Moneydance!

Thanks Jessica. I've just opened up my accounts at PNC and will be "switching" over from Quicken at the end of this month. Will update this thread when I do so that others can know how these institutions work for me.

Tonight, I tried to set up my PNC online banking as I get my credentials from PNC yesterday. I tried a number of combinations but no dice in Moneydance (2010 ver 746).

I went back to quicken and setup online banking and it worked fine. I was able to determine my proper user id and Password/PIN for using PNC online banking.

I went back to Moneydance and tried the credentials that worked in Quicken. Still nothing in Moneydance. Deleted the online banking setup in Moneydance and reset it up. Still no go. Get a bad communications error. Now can I get this working in MD? I know that online banking works as I'm connecting fine via Quicken.

    Thanks!

Could you paste the exact error message you're getting here? That will help me troubleshoot the problem. Either copy and pasting the text of a screenshot would work fine.

    The message is:

There was an error communicating with your financial institution. The details of this error are below.

A communication or parsing error occurred. This could be the result of a network problem, a proxy error, or misconfigured server.
Error Description: java.io.IOException: HTTP Error:400 Bad Request

I went to the "online" menu and selected "setup online banking". When the Signup screen came up, I selected New connection and chose PNC bank to download the latest configurations. Then I went through the setup using my credentials that work with Quicken. (I had already disabled online banking on this account before trying to reconfigure). When I tried to download transactions, I got the above message.

    Thanks much.

That error message usually means that either your username or password is incorrect. Have you activated your PNC account for direct connections instead of just web connections? If not, that's probably the source of the problem. There are instructions for activating your account on PNC's website at https://www.pnc.com/webapp/unsec/ProductsAndService.do?siteArea=/pn.... If you activate your account for direct connections form Quicken, it should work with Moneydance.

Yes, I have activated my accounts for direct connections. I've received my credentials from PNC. More specifically, I have used Quicken 2010 (on Win) to download transactions from these accounts. So....I know that I'm using the proper credentials as these accounts are working with Quicken.

When I get home tonight, I'll copy the logging data from the console window of MD when I'm trying to log in and we'll see what the transaction looks like.

I used the python script I found in another forum thread to remove all my direct connect data from the MD file and tried to set up DC again. Still the same problem.

Will post the console log and see what we can find.
    Thx.

One more thought. i was/am using Quicken for Win 2010. When I filled out the PNC request for activation of Quicken online banking access, I checked the box that said QWin 2010. There were other options for other versions of QWin. I noticed that you said that MD "emulates" QWin 2008. Should I call PNC and have them "reset" my access to QWin 2008?

Latest Update. I created a brand new MD data file. I created my category structure manually and created some blank sample accounts. I the entered my account number and routing number on one of the accounts and attempted to configure online banking. I selected "online > setup online banking" for the account. I got the setup box and selected "new connection". I selected my bank (PNC Bank) and got an java error message. The MD console log is:

    Hi,

A couple of things you can try. First, it looks like you're running an older version of Java, which could potentially be the source of these errors. Try updating to Java 6 (also known as 1.6) to see if it clears the errors. Also, make sure Quicken isn't running while you're trying to connect in Moneydance, just in case that's causing some kind of network conflict.

If that doesn't work, it would be worth telling your bank that you're using Quicken 2008 instead of 2010. That shouldn't matter, but it might for your bank.

If you still can't connect, please let me know and I'll try to puzzle out what else might be going on. Hopefully we can get this fixed soon!

I'm running OS X 10.5.8, I don't think Apple has released Java 6 for that platform, I'll have to check.

Quicken is definately not running, I'm running a VM of WinXP so I can run Quicken for Windows on my Mac.

I might call PNC and see if they can reset me to QWin 2008 and see if that makes a difference.

    Thx.

Ok, I looked at the Java prefreences on the Mac. I can ONLY choose Java 6 in 64 Bit, not 32 bit. If I disable Java 5 an ONLY use Java 6 (in 64 Bit), MD does not even launch.

I tried again with a brand new data file. Trying to set up online banking, I get this.

    Starting Moneydance 2010r3 (746)

    at

The message says that the program cannot refresh the FI info from moneydance.com. That's kinda interesting.

OK, it's NOT Java. I loaded MD 2010 746 on a Win VM with Java 1.6-20 and got the same error message. So that rules out the Java issue. Attached is the txt file of the console log from the Java 1.6 installation.

    What's the next step?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Unfortunately, we've reached the limits of my knowledge of the internals of Moneydance on this bug. I'll need to check in with Sean (our lead developer) about it to see if he has any idea what's going on. I'll hopefully talk to him on Monday or Tuesday and let you know what he says. I do know, however, that the 404 error isn't the problem. That error always comes up when you connect to a bank because Moneydance is trying to use a feature of the Moneydance website that Sean temporarily disabled a while back. It's not related to the Illegal State error you are getting.

I'm sorry this bug is taking a while to sort out. I'll let you know what I find out from Sean and hopefully we'll get things working for you soon.

Thanks, Please let Sean know that I can do a Skype call or iChat video session with him if he needs more info and data. This is really important as I am trying to get off of Quicken in the next week or so. As I've not fully stated using MD and PNC bank, I have some flexibility to play around and try some things to troubleshoot and fix this. I'm more that happy to help you all find the root cause of this problem.

    Hi,

So, I talked to Sean, and he was actually aware of this bug and believes it's fixed in the newest build of 2010 (build 748). Could you please update to that version and let me know if it fixes the problem? You can download the update from our website at http://moneydance.com/trac/wiki/Moneydance2010Beta.

    Hi,

Actually, you're getting two new error messages in those logs. It looks like the IllegalStateException is fixed, but there's a new NullPointer bug in Java 6. I'll mention that to Sean so that he can fix it.

In your Java 5 logs, it looks like you were actually able to connect to PNC but got the "400 Bad Request" response again. Did you ever call PNC at have them reset your account for Quicken 2008? If not. please do so, as that might solve the problem. However, if you're set up to connect as Quicken 2008, you're using the PIN they sent you in the mail, and you're still getting the 400 error, please let me know.

I called PNC bank and spoke to their quicken support department. The indicate that they do not differentiate between Q2010 and Q2008 when they setup and configure the accounts. So they claim that for their purposes either version will work as they do not pick the version when the customer requests access to quicken.

I changed the default PIN that PNC sent me via quicken and am currently able to connect with PNC via quicken an all works fine. Using the same login credentials with MD and it does not work.

Is there a debug trace or other type of connection log we can look at, or just the console log.

A BIG thanks to Sean. I saw that he was on IM at 9pm my time (something like 2am his time), so I pinged him for assistance. He cheerfully worked with me via IM chat to resolve the issue. He had to tweak the online banking configuration at the MD servers for PNC bank.

I'm happy to report that I can now connect to PNC and am downloading transactions.

    Good by Quicken......FOREVER!!!

    Thanks Sean.

    Hi,

Sorry didn't get back to you sooner, but I'm glad Sean was able to help you. I looked at what he did, and it's definitely something I couldn't have fixed without him.

Please let us know if you have any further problems, and thanks for using Moneydance!

    No problem Jessica.

I know you all are busy with the release of MD2010 and the iPhone App. I happened to see Sean on IM and gave it a shot. He fixed the problem in short order.

Still having a problem with Bill Pay with PNC (See: http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/problems/1100-cant-use-onl... ) and eTrade is doing funny things (see: http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/problems/1102-problems-wit... ).

But all in all, I'm happy it's working.

    Thanks.
