downloading transactions

I've just gotten my accounts transferred over from Quicken to the point where I am ready to begin downloading transactions. I did manage to download and import the transactions, but I'm having the following issue: in Quicken, I download "available transactions" and the file adds the transactions that occurred since my last download. In Moneydance, it is adding ALL of the available transactions that are embedded from the last 90 days. Isn't there some way--aside from manually merging the transactions--that MD can differentiate the old and new transactions? (I have checked "automatically merge downloaded transactions" in my Preferences, and the transactions all have the exact same dates so they should be identifiable as duplicates.)

    Hi Mandy,

The first time you download into a new account in Moneydance, the program will ask the bank for all of the information it has available. This is why you got some much information from your bank. Additionally, since you imported the old transactions from Quicken, they don't contain the OFX transaction ID numbers, which makes it hard for us to find duplicates automatically. So, the first time you download, you'll get a lot of transactions and a lot of duplicates to clean up. However, on each subsequent download, Moneydance will only ask for the transactions that have occurred since the last download. This means you won't have to clean up those duplicates again. it should be much smoother sailing after that first batch.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and thanks for your interest in Moneydance!

Does it matter if I download a QIF or a QFX file?

QFX is preferable if you have the option. It contains more information (including transaction ID numbers) which makes it much easier for us to automatically identify duplicates.

Trying out the demo of Moneydance. Can you point me to or give me tips on how to efficiently clean up the duplicates? Should I check "merge" in preferences?

    Hi Jim,

Is this the right forum to add download financial institution requests?

Yes it is. However, you should start a new thread to request that the Moneydance Support Staff look into whether or not direct connect online access is available from your particular financial institution.

This comment was split into a new discussion: downloading transactions

I am trying to bring up MD after work crashed my file and my back ups. So had to start from scratch and re-install software. Now I can't get MD to import manually downloaded file. Tried both QIF and QFX downloads. Just for the record can't get previously working Fidelity Investments to download using online MD download. In both cases getting java errors.

On the manual download get Error:java.lang.Exception:Invalid data format or file corrupted.

In the case of the auto download with Fidelity I am getting the Error Description:java.net.ConnectException:Connection timed out:connect (Is this error because MD can't "find" the internet connection?

Sorry for both questions but I started this process in Feb and it is pretty time consuming but It is a problem w/o a check register program
