you can use the Transaction Report. Specify a time period and
whether to sub-total (by month, for example), and pick the category
from the Accounts list.

For multiple categories, try the Detailed Income and Expenses
report. Pick the Individual Accounts radio-button and select all of
the expense categories you want. Sub-categories are not
automatically included, and there is no sub-total option for this
report.

ljbtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/8688312010-01-18T02:26:45Z2010-01-18T02:26:45ZReport for Category not possible !?

Go to Detailed Income and Expense report. (should be listed in
the sidebar or go to Tools > Graphs and Reports > Detailed
Income & Expense.) If you selected fromth the sidebar the
report will open in the main window on the home page (if you
selected from tools a pop-up box will show you the same options I'm
going to describe on the right hand side of the pop-up). Once you
have the report open select edit and begin with the time frame you
want. Then click in the bubble for Individual Accounts. A listing
of all the accounts and categories will display. Check/uncheck the
ones you want/don't want to see in the report. Click "ok" and you
should get the data you're looking for.

Nonametag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/8688312010-01-18T03:35:54Z2010-01-18T03:35:58ZReport for Category not possible !?

Just to add to this, that in the detailed income and expense,
you can select categories to report on, but not accounts. and
likewise in the transaction report you can select individual
accounts or categories but not both. There is a new trac to vote on
to request this feature. You can find a link to it in another
question, which I've forgotten the title of, but is fairly clearly
similar to this issue.

john phillipstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/8688312010-01-18T05:14:50Z2010-01-18T05:14:55ZReport for Category not possible !?

Thank you for those postings!
That did work indeed. I am glad.
Finding "Categories" under "Accounts" wasn't very intuitive and
there might be room for improvement. But it works!

Manny Eggers
