My partner and I both have separate investment accounts, which hold the same securities. BUT we only have to enter the price once.... (actually automatically using the Quote Loader extension). This sounds like you have created two security master records for each stock. This really is not necessary and everything can be reported separately.

On the second point you just need to set the default category. Highlight the account on the left sidebar and then click menu>account>edit and change the default category.

FYI - I create a category called ** UNASSIGNED ** and set this to the default.

If you have no fee then you do not need to enter the fee category, just leave it and ignore it. Once you press enter, the field blanks out.

FYI - You don't need to go to the bank register to enter interest (I have never even looked in that window). Just add a new line in the main register window and use the type Xfr with the category set to the income category and a positive number (this record will appear in the bank register window anyway).....

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488665312020-11-30T17:35:56Z2020-11-30T17:35:56ZInvestments

I am not support staff, just a user
Hi William

You can set up as many investment accounts as you need, as you have found.
However, if you have the same Security held in a number of Investment Accounts you should only set it up once under TOOLS – SECURITIES. You should then add it to each of the Investment Accounts using the Security Detail window tab for an Investment Account, then by click ADD SECURITY.
This way a given security is only created once and you update it price in only one place. If you set up the same security, one for each Investment Account, you can run into problems. For example, using the Quote Loader extension to automatically update prices. Quote Loader required that when you set up a Security it contains its Ticker Symbol. If you have a number of Securities set up with the same Ticker only one instance of the Security will have its prices updated.

On your second point I am not clear what you are asking. If it relates to the default category for an account, that can be set by highlighting the Account in the Side Bar, list on left and setting the default category using its dropdown after clicking ACCOUNT – EDIT ACCOUNT.

On your third point this may help. In register of an investment account when you enter the ACTION field start typing the action you require and the field will fill in after a few characters, then press tab to move to the next field.
The same principle holds good in the Description field of a Bank/Credit card Account, Moneydance learns from data you entered in previous transactions.

Hope this helps

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488665312020-11-30T18:13:27Z2021-06-13T01:38:32ZInvestments

Wow, I'm impressed. Two responses so quickly. I'll read them both before

This is certainly one of Money dance best features.

wrwnc39tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488665312020-11-30T18:13:40Z2021-06-13T01:38:33ZInvestments

Wow, I'm impressed. Two responses so quickly. I'll read them both before

Thanks for the help. I now see how to enter a new security so that it can
be put into different accounts. I also created a null category so that the
category now shows up as a blank when I make a dividend reinvestment.

Bill

wrwnc39tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488665312020-12-01T00:23:31Z2021-06-13T01:38:32ZInvestments

Derek,

Thank you for the help. I now see how to enter the security only once and
then assign it to different accounts. I also created a null category so
that I don't get the ATM listing each time.

Finally, I will note that Quicken assigns a different first letter to each
type of transaction. For example, dividend and reinvest dividend begin
with different letters so there is no need to go past the letter "d" or
"r," and dividend exchange simply doesn't exist. Similarly, add, buy, sell, and income all begin with unique letters. Only "remove" and "reinvest"
share the initial letter. A little ingenuity with "remove" would make it
much simpler for entering Moneydance transactions.

All that said, I still like Moneydance and am glad to be rid of Quicken

wrwnc39tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488665312020-12-01T06:27:59Z2020-12-01T06:27:59ZInvestments

FYI. I never select a type; I always duplicate a prior txn (for the right type of action) and tab through changing where necessary... right click (or cmd-D I think).

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)
