Multiple Users & Multiple Computers...... One Family
I live in the UK and have recently moved from PC to Mac. I am considering purchasing Moneydance to replace Quicken which is not available in the UK anymore. It seems like a good comparable package to Quicken, however I have a couple of questions. My husband also has a Mac and currently uses Excel for his accounts. We have some accounts we share, and I understand that we need to purchase two licenses to operate on two computers (he as a Mac Book), but I wondered whether it is possible as well as having our individual accounts on our separate computers we could sync the data in the mutual accounts some way, perhaps through MobileMe to stop us having to enter the data twice, or have him using my computer. (My husband is a great guy but he has a bit of a man/machine interface problem and every time he uses my computer he loses bits of my data!)
Many thanks
Maddie French

Maddie,
Hi, so long as it is just you and your husband, I would go ahead and purchase just one license for the both of you.
Regarding the shared accounts. I'm not familiar with MobileMe but if it is anything like 'Dropbox' which is what we use then it should work fine. Moneydance stores your data in a '.md' file and that file is what you would need to be providing common access to in order to share the data between multiple computers. In dropbox, you keep your file save on their internet server (which may or may not raise privacy concerns for you) and then you access it from computers set up to do so. From the perspective of the computer running dropbox it looks like the dropbox folder is just another folder on your hard drive. There are two possible ways you could implement the file sharing. Moneydance is not currently set up so that you could share certain accounts but not others. So you would need to either, have one common file that has all of both your accounts that you both have access to, or you have personal files, which you don't share, and a shared file that has your joint accounts.
Please let me know if this answers your question and if you have any more,

Hi John,
Thanks for your reply. I think it answers the questions. Can I clarify a couple of things. It doesn't matter that we have to share all the files. That's fine. But can one license allow us to have the software on 2 computers. They are not networked. Mobile Me is apple software that operates through the iphone and means you can update your calendar etc while away from your desk.. I think I saw on one of your forums that Mobile Me works with your software.
Kind regards
Maddie

Maddie,
I'm not John, but I have one license used on multiple computers (Mac & PC), which I keep in sync via Dropbox rather than MobileMe.
I searched "license," in the FAQs and found this, which may help you -
"We have a somewhat simple formula that we like for our users to follow in determining how many licenses they need. Take the number of people using Moneydance and the number of computers on which it is being used. Choose the lower of the two numbers and that's how many licenses to purchase. I.E. you can either a) use it on as many computers as you like, or b) have as many people as you like use it on one computer.
For the purposes of our license, couples count as a single person."

Maddie, as far as licenses, one will be fine for your situation.

Thanks for this reply. I've bought one licence. I'm now encountering problems saving files. I have looked through the 'manual' and as it doesn't list contents individually I can't find out how you do this. I've already posted a query and hope to receive the reply soon. Many thanks for your help.

Maddie,
I'd love to answer your question about saving files but it seems I can't find it listed where you posted your query. Do you have the link for it? Also, thanks for posting it separately, its very helpful from the viewpoint of forum tidiness to have new queries start new threads.

Hi Jon,
I've posted my query about saving files under problems. I know the programme doesn't have a problem, but I do. Maybe I should post it under questions needing answers for idiots!
