Upgrading from v2017.10

I'm really not sure if my prior post got in here okay today. I was told to log in before I could submit it and got confused after resetting my password in order to do that. So please delete this if it amounts to a duplicate post.

I'm using v2017.10 and want to know if there are any gotchas I need to be aware of if I upgrade to v2021 today. Also, if I don't like v2021, can I easily go back to v2017.10? I did read just a few minutes ago that they use the same file format. At least I think they do.

    I'm a fellow user.

An upgrade from 2017 to 2021 is not expect to have any gotcha moments. The underying data structures are essential the same so there is no great data conversion required. The software itself does things a little differently, think of it as evolution.

While it is likely you could go back it is not always guaranteed that you can, backward compatibility is not a given jumping back that far, and it is not something that is tested, so to facilitate going back you should take a backup that you can restore if needed, of course you should take a backup in any case before any sort of upgrade.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "gotchas," but the previous post provides good information. I'd also add that you'll likely need to purchase a discounted upgrade key to run Moneydance 2021, but you can check for sure by pasting your license key into the Upgrading field at http://infinitekind.com/purchase. I'm not sure if that's the sort of thing you were referring to.

In terms of backing up, I always have backups of the data file that I store in a couple places that MoneyDance can't touch. So restoring the data isn't a problem. If I were to go back to v2017.10, is that simply a matter of copying a backup copy of MoneyDance.app to my Applications folder after trashing the v2021 file there? Or would I need to also make backups of other supporting files for MoneyDance?

    Obviously I'm on a Mac.

More important than the program itself (the .app files), which you can always redownload if needed, is making sure you have a copy of your data file (the one that ends with the .moneydance file extension), which is completely separate from the program itself. If you're not sure where you have been saving your data, check the the default file location: https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/file-locations-and-changes/de.... You'll want to make sure you have a copy of your main data file somewhere, and not open that copy with the newer version of the program. That way you can ensure that you can still open it on the version in which it was created. Again there haven't been major changes to the data structure since the 2017 version, but there may be unforeseen issues with jumping back that many versions.

Thanks to both of you. I always have more than one copy of the most recent .moneydance file, and multiple generations of it. So that's not a problem. Now that I see the downloads page for older versions, I feel safe and will upgrade today. Love the app. Have used it for many years.

Odd. Seems like the download server isn't working. I keep clicking on the MacOS download button and nothing happens. I'll try again later.

I notice that my .moneydance file from v2017.10, which was initially 47.9mb is now 20.2mb after loading and saving it with v2021. Is that a problem?

Is this because I initially opened v2021 (after downloading it) by double clicking on my .moneydance file. After the file loaded, I entered my Reg Key. Could this have caused it to delete some data on initial loading because it didn't have my Reg Key in it when I double clicked on the .moneydance file to start it up?

I'm scared I screwed up by starting MD that way. Though the data looks okay in it.

The key has nothing to do with the data. Without the key you are just in trial mode which limits the number of manually entered transactions, until you enter the key, nothing more, it has no effect on existing data.

Later versions of Moneydance take a different approach to consolidating data updates than 2017 did, and it is more efficient, this is part of what I meant when I said the software has been evolving. So it is quite possible the software has done some housekeeping, which occurs at each restart, and you are seeing the results. If all data is present I would not expect there to be a problem.

Thank you so much for this reply. I was really nervous.

Can I assume that v2017 would have trouble with that smaller size file should I find a need to revert back to that version?

As others have said,, moving back with the current dataset isn't tested.

That's why you have a backup to fall back to if you move back to 2017.

Of course, if you use the new dataset for weeks, then want to fall back, well, you could test the current dataset and report back, but the caveats have already been said.

Understood. I don't imagine I'll have any problem with v2021. If do, I'll just post a question on this very helpful forum.

I also just upgraded from v2017 to v2021 (for $25). Unfortunately, when I try to open my data file (with the .moneydance extension) in the new version, I get the following error message: "Error reading file: java.lang.NullPointerException"

Well, I just finished importing two months of data from three accounts and all is working well with v2021. Thanks for the help here.
