Baking Up to an External Hard Drive

I am a long time enthusiastic user of Moneydance so I should know this but I am unsure!

I am about to scrap this Laptop for a new one. I have overheating issues.

As an interim measure I have opened up Moneydance on a Desktop and transferred the latest dated backup file via a stick. All seemed fine apart from some decimal points which gave me millions instead of thousands on investment accounts. On closure though the file did not seem to back up automatically. Is this an issue?

Second I am unsure which files I should backup to an external hard drive for added security and in which folders they are situated in.

Thanks. First issue resolved. The Desktop opened and old version. Now upgraded to latest edition and backing up fine.

Just need to sort out location of files to backup to external hard drive.

I'm not entirely sure of your question...

All you really need is the .moneydancearchive file created by File/Export Backup. You restore this via File/Restore from Backup.

The other useful file (for license and other settings) is config.dict...

    Nothing else is really needed.

    Thanks Stuart.

Moneydance seems to have created the following folders:

    “ .moneydance/archive/backups”

Presumably the folder I save to the external hard drive is the one called “backups”. It seems to contain quite a few files including the one with the current date.

I always struggle with things I do very infrequently. Intutition does not always work.

Depends on your settings in File/Preferences/Backup? You can change this...

Each *.moneydancearchive is a backup (usually you will see the date on the end of the name (before the extension)

Thanks again Stuart. That seems to be sorted. I know what I am doing – after 10 years!. The Preference:Backup was the key. I expect I will have some more dumb problems before too long.

It sounds like things are sorted out here, but in case not, you can find detailed instructions on moving to a new computer at: https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/file-locations-and-changes/mo...
