Toolbox has a feature to make unused categories inactive.</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T21:04:51Z2021-11-14T21:04:51ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>Also is there any way (I doubt it) to show how many transactions are associated with a category? I have many categories that have transactions, but the balance ends up zero when it became inactive.</p>
<p>Knowing which categories have zero transactions would enable one to more easily decide to delete them vs. making them inactive.</p>
<p>Also a transaction value would show which categories are more active....</p></div>dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T21:05:43Z2021-11-14T21:06:06ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>Stuart - can Toolbox do it in batches versus one by one?</p>
<p>How does the feature work? Choice? Date last used? Zero transactions?</p></div>dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T21:07:26Z2021-11-14T21:07:26ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>You said unused, that would mean zero transactions, I assume.</p></div>dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T21:16:24Z2021-11-14T21:16:24ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>Run Account Menu:<br>

<p>Also - wouldn't making a top level unused (zero balance, zero transactions) category inactive make the sub-categories inactive? That's what happens when I change that in moneydance. [Actually, it doesn't make the sub-categories inactive, but MD changes them to grey as well, which would make it very hard to track which are really inactive]</p></div>dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T21:20:25Z2021-11-14T21:20:25ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>Just looked at report, looks like you ignore top level categories with zero balance, right? Doesn't ignore zero balance categories with transactions, it seems, and some of those are active for me (some are not).</p></div>dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T21:23:42Z2021-11-14T21:23:42ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>Why don’t you just try it on a test copy and see how well it’s been coded (or not) 😉 . Don’t forget, if it helps you inactivate 1000 categories, you can always manually reactivate the two or three you want active.</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T21:24:17Z2021-11-14T21:24:17ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>I do not know any way of bulk marking used categories as inactive within Moneydance itself.</p>
<p>If you open up the register for the category you can get an idea of how many transactions are in it.</p>
<p>Note that if you are in a category register and you decide you can move them to another category in order to consolidate you can using using Batch change, but select to move to another ACCOUNT and then select the category from the drop down to move them to. If you were to select category at this point you will be in a new world of pain.</p>
<p>Doing this sort of thing is one of the times you really need to have made a backup.</p></div>dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T22:08:28Z2021-11-14T22:08:28ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>Is there a way to make an expense category an income category or vice versa?</p>
<p>This category has only one zero value transaction.</p>
<p>If not, what would be the proper way to create the opposite category type and move the information (assuming non-zero transaction values)?</p></div>dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T22:15:00Z2021-11-14T22:15:00ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>Stuart put the capability to do change Income to Expense and vice versa in Toolbox. It works pretty well.</p>
<p>There is a way to do it within Moneydance itself but it involves creating a category of the correct type, using batch change to move the transactions then deleting the original category.</p></div>dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T22:21:29Z2021-11-14T22:21:29ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>… the answer is Toolbox…. Now what’s the question?! 😉</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494893402021-11-14T22:25:27Z2021-11-14T22:25:27ZMaking multiple categories inactive<div><p>@dwg - yes, I was describing the moneydance way, but made it a question.</p>
<p>@stuart - I've used a lot of Toolbox (and tested a bit), but there's just so much there.</p></div>dtd
