If you pay a transaction with funds from two accounts then there has to be an entry in each account. It is the reverse situation of when you pay a single amount from one account and it goes to multiple categories.

In theory you can do a split form the category side but I would not recommend it since it is not intended that you work with category registers directly due to the way they work.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494958742021-11-17T22:01:01Z2021-11-17T22:01:01ZHow to split a transaction between tenders

just a user,

I agree with dwg, you want to create two account transactions from one entry. Obviously MD could write some code to give you that tool, but it would be so rarely used I don't think they could justify the time. I'm not aware of any tricks where you could cause that to happen in MD. Of course when you download those accounts online you will pick up both entries, but otherwise manually you are just going have to enter both.

mhoggietag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494958742021-11-18T22:51:51Z2021-11-18T22:52:43ZHow to split a transaction between tenders

Hmmm, perhaps I've misunderstood your question, but if not, I've been doing this for years using the Split functionality (see attached).

So, choose one of your accounts (not the category), let's say "Debit Card". Enter the split window. Now allocate a $60 "Deposit" to the credit card and a $100 Payment to the "auto:gas" Category. Isn't this what you wanted? You're left with a $40 payment from the credit card (although the heading is wrong in the split window - pah!)

You can also create such a Split from the Category register and I've done it occasionally with no observable ill-effects, but it's not recommended (I suspect because it was once buggy - but I've been using MD since v2018 or so, and it's always worked for me. The MD experts (fossils? ;-) ) recommend against doing it from a Category register tho, so I mostly try to choose an Account register.) You aren't limited to two Accounts. You can split to your heart's content!!
I also used to use this method in Quicken for ~25 years and MS Money (I seem to recall) for a period last century.

I've noticed this occasionally causes MD to be confused as to which register is the "Show Other Side" but I don't use that feature much and so far as I can tell it's a non-issue.

If I've misunderstood your question, apologies.

Cheers - a fellow user

I have used category registers myself. If you are in a category register you need to have a different mindset and realise that depending on what you are doing you may have to treat it as you would an account register. This is especially notable with the Batch Change command where if you were to treat it like a category bad things are likely to happen and you will likely have to restore from a backup.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/494958742021-11-19T01:43:02Z2021-11-19T01:43:02ZHow to split a transaction between tenders

One of my favourite fossils, I might add! 🤭

tgilbert666
