What is the best way to back up to an external harddrive?

    Just a user.

I usually use "File/Export Backup" to create a MANUAL backup to anywhere I want.

If you want your automatic backups to go to an external drive, that can be done as well, but someone else can jump in to tell you how to do that.

    I'm a fellow user.

I would only have the automatic backups pointing to an external disk if and only if that external device is always connected. I would not do it with a device I routinely connect and disconnect.

Automatic backups location is set under the menu item File --> Preferences on the backup tab.

    Hi Donna,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

To amend the backup file settings, you should choose Moneydance --> Preferences, then select the 'Backups' tab, as outlined in this article of the Knowledge Base.

From this window, you can amend the backup location, and choose the maximum number of backups to be stored.

You could amend the backup location, so the automatic backup files are sent to you external hard drive or a shared folder location like Dropbox. This will ensure your data is accessible from another system, even if you were to encounter complete computer failure.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.
