What are you seeing?
Are you referring to the file names perhaps getting longer, with date and time stamps in them?
How do you launch Moneydance? By the app icon, or by clicking the dataset file name?
(My suspicion is that you are manually opening a backup file and not the actual live dataset)

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/523636722022-03-29T05:42:10Z2022-03-29T05:42:11Zproblems with older files overwriting current files

Thanks for responding
it seems to happen if I open the files from the app icon, or if i manually launch from my back up file, paying attention to the date stamp so I am trying to open my most recent or next to recent backup
it will sometime open the right file, and then after a blink revert to an older file
not sure what has happened to the file i tried to open but when i try again it is the older file
the names are getting longer and longer

A couple of days ago I opened the file from the app and it was an older file
I manually updated all of the data and closed it and reopened it and it looked like all was well
and then when i reopened it tonight all of my work upgrading the file was lost.
the recent file opened, and then the older file appeared and my new file that i had worked on was not where to be found

RONALD DIAMONDtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/523636722022-03-29T05:44:37Z2022-03-29T05:44:37Zproblems with older files overwriting current files

Please share the actual filename of the file you are opening and the one that gets opened?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/523636722022-03-29T05:44:59Z2022-03-29T05:44:59Zproblems with older files overwriting current files

... and what version of MD are you using?

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/523636722022-03-29T11:05:18Z2022-03-29T11:05:18Zproblems with older files overwriting current files

Hi Ron,

I must agree with Stuart, as from what you describe, it sounds like you are opening a backup each time. Are you double clicking on the file to open it?

So in order to locate your previous data file, you should open Moneydance and click on File > Open. There you will see a list of all recently opened data files.

If you cannot find your data file there, then you could click on Help > Show Document Folder, this will open your default data file location, where all of the data files are located.

Another option is to click on Help > Show Archive Folder, this will open the default backup file location and you can choose to restore a backup. The time stamp should help you choosing the relevant file.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

I am using moneydance version 2017.7.1(1671)
on a Mac using Monterey version 12.3 (same problem was happening before my recent upgrade)

I am not sure what I did but I was able to open a recent file that was accurate
as long as I open it from the icon it now seems to work
i have no idea what i did so i am concerned it could happen again

any idea what happened
thanks
In error, you were clicking on the backup file and restoring a backup each time.

Using the App Icon is the safest as it will reopen the last dataset used.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/523636722022-03-29T15:14:34Z2022-03-29T15:14:34Zproblems with older files overwriting current files

I'm glad you were able to find your data file, Ron but I wouldn't exclude possible issues showing up again.
Generally, for an optimal performance your operating system - Monterey requires the latest preview version Moneydance 2022.3 (4063). This is available to download from this page.

In order to upgrade to Moneydance 2022, you can enter your current license key into the 'Upgrading?' box on this page to redeem a 50% discount. After purchasing, you'll be sent a new license key via email.

if I do the upgrade, will this help insure i avoid similar problems going forward?

as an aside
I do not believe that I received any info from Infinite Mind about the availability of upgrades, or the need for one as I upgraded to Monteray
thanks

However, looking at the Previous versions of Moneydance. The latest build of Moneydance 2017 is Moneydance 2017.10 (1706) and the system requirements listed below the download link on this page clearly state that macOS 10.14 (Mojave) is the latest recommended.

On this page the system requirement is macOS 10.12+ for Moneydance 2022.3 (4068).

In the new version, you can set a preference for receiving updates, as follow:
Moneydance->Preferences->Check For Updates- - the options are:

Stable Updates Only

Preview Beta Updates

Don't Check for Updates

Finally, in the Welcome to Moneydance window (in Moneydance 2022.3 (4068)), you can set Moneydance to Re-Open the Last File - When Starting.

Please let us know if you have further questions.
