The developer believes that the data should be hidden so users can never ‘play’ with it. Personally, if you know what you are doing, I fundamentally disagree. I want my data where I can see it, move it, back it up etc. mine is in documents. But, up to you.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/544665222022-05-28T16:47:08Z2022-05-28T16:47:08ZLocation of main data set

Thanks Stuart, I will leave it where I can see it as before.
While we were initially forced to create a default sandboxed location for data files to be able to sell the program on the Mac App Store (and that remains the only file location option if Moneydance is purchased through that site), one ongoing problem this actually helped with was creating a default 'out of the way' location for data files, which users would be unlikely to accidentally delete. This happened with surprising regularity in older versions, where people would store their data in their downloads or documents folder, but not really understand they had chosen t do this, and then delete it when 'cleaning up' their files. As long as one understands where one's data is stored, there's nothing wrong with storing it elsewhere. The only thing one should definitely not do with a data file is store it in a file syncing service/location, like Dropbox or iCloud, as that often leads to errors due to partial syncing.
