Exporting to an excel spreadsheet

Hi;
I am interested in your software. I think I understand that your software downloads bank account data and categorizes it. The question I have is, at year end, can I export this data to a spreadsheet (Excel)? Will the data be able to be manipulated within the spreadsheet ie will numbers be imported as numbers and not text?
Thanks

    Hello,

While you can't export data directly into the Excel format, you can export into the CSV format, which spreadsheet programs (including Excel) can open. That being said, it depends on what kind of data manipulation you want to do. A common thing I've seen would be exporting something like one of the reports from Moneydance into a spreadsheet to make minor adjustments for printing, for example. If you were looking to do something like export all of your transactions in bulk to a spreadsheet, you could perhaps do that in part, but the data wouldn't really be in a useful format to do much which (mostly because of the sheer amount of transactions). I think most people would use Moneydance reports to generate summary data, perhaps correct the underlying transactions in the program if there are errors, but export that report if needed.

If that's not quite what you are asking, can you describe in more detail what you are looking to export and what you want to do with it in Excel?

I encourage you to download our free trial version from http://infinitekind.com/downloads and experiment with the program before you decide if you would like to purchase it. The demo version is fully functional and allows you to manually enter 100 transactions. Imported transactions are not limited, so you'll be able to fully test things like importing from other programs, connections with your bank, and exporting to spreadsheets. If you decide to purchase the program at a later date (from http://infinitekind.com/purchase) you can keep all your data, the license key simply unlocks the ability to manually enter more transactions.

In case you haven't found it yet, detailed information on how to use the program can be found at https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb

There are also (free) add-on extensions to the software which allow you to extract data in proper csv (numbers) format for opening in excel, including extracts of account and investment registers (for example).

Hello Ethan, thank you for your response.
I have another question. Can your software allocate expenses to certain
"classes"? By this I mean that I have several properties for which I
receive rent. I would like to keep track of income received by each
property and track the expenses for each property separately.
    Please advise.
    Thanks & regards,
    Gary Hinshaw

I'd recommend using the 'Income and Expense' report, or the 'Income and Expense, Detailed' report.
Reports are accessible via Tools --> Graphs and Reports, or in the left side bar (below your accounts).

When viewing the report settings, you can choose the accounts to include and you can specify the date range. The date range can be set as longer than just 12 months.

At the bottom of the report settings window, you'll likely see 'All Income' and 'All Expense'. Choose the button to the right of this - "Show: By Individual'. This will display each of your individual categories and you can choose which to include/exclude before generating the report to view your data.

Within Moneydance, you can easily transfer your report data to Excel.

After generating the report, choose 'Save'.
Change the 'Format' to 'Comma Delimited'- Encoded for Excel
Then click 'Browse' and specify where you want to save the file.

Before saving, check the correct file format has been applied. Your file should be called 'YourFileName.csv'.
If the file format is not included, you can add '.csv' (without the quotes) to the end of the file name.

This will create a comma delimited file that will open with Excel.

Once you have saved the file, you can navigate to it on your computer, and re-name the file from there, to include .csv at the end of the file name.

Also, you can use the extension called Extract Data (version 1024). This is available from Extensions->Manage Extensions->Extract Data

This extension is a useful tool aiming to extract your data to screen/csv.
It allows you to download your data to Excel where you can filter, sort etc.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Moneydance has support for Categories and Tags - Tags are equivalent to Quicken's classes and are used as a filtering mechanism when reporting.

What and how well you can report is directly related to how well the data has been categorised and tagged when it is entered. You can create, edit and delete any category tags are on the fly value.

I would suggest you look at the Knowledge Base articles on categories and tags:

Thank you. If tags replace the QuickBooks classes, chances are the software will work for me.

The thing to note that in Moneydance Tags are not a top level query item i.e. you cannot do an initial query on the tag value then get a report on those items containing the tag.

Tags are a filter therefore you would need to identify what categories you want reported on then use Tags to filter only those transactions that contain the tag.
