may I ask why you need to make a 6.6mb file smaller? Mine is about 150mb with 35 years of data, so your file seems extremely small already.

But to answer your question - what you propose will royally mess up your resulting files, and will take you forever to get totally right.

Still, you could use the Toolbox extension, and eliminate redundant data with the shrink function.

But I'd say don't attempt what you propose.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/558850222022-09-27T19:53:45Z2022-09-27T19:53:45ZFile size reduction

Hi William,

Your data file at 6+ MB is not excessive. Mine holds transactions dating back to the 1980s and clocks in at roughly 37MB.

To restrict access to prior data, the use of filters in the register and the use of reporting by year is likely a better endeavor than stripping out yearly transactions. Especially when it comes to investment accounts as doing so will negatively impact performance history.

If you are sure that you want to reduce the size of your data file, Install the Toolbox extension.
From the Toolbox menu bar, go to 'TOOLBOX Options' > 'Advanced Mode'. Click the 'Active Mode' button. Under the 'Update Functions' heading, select 'Shrink Dataset size'.

For anyone reading this thread… Toolbox shrink dataset feature is safe to run as it does not touch your actual data. It eliminates redundant internal change logs that are saved forever, which are not needed.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/558850222022-09-28T12:00:46Z2022-09-28T12:00:46ZFile size reduction

Hi William,

I can see you’ve received some replies from our knowledgeable Moneydance customers and I would like to confirm that if you wish to reduce your file size, you best option is using the Toolbox.

To achieve this, you should navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox (version 1054).

Launch the Toolbox and navigate to Toolbox Options (on top left corner) and select: Toolbox Options->Advanced mode.

Click on the red 'Advance Mode' tab and choose: Shrink Data-set size and follow the on-screen instruction.

Finally restart Moneydance.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.
