I'm generally a supporter of performing clean installs, if the machine you are replacing is a secondary machine as far as syncing is concerned then a fresh install is simple enough, if it is the primary it would warrant extra consideration.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/577282022023-01-27T23:27:50Z2023-01-27T23:27:50Zmoving to new laptop

thanks - i will do a clean install since it is secondary - i will remove it first before doing the transfer - you have always been a help before

v3hansontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/577282022023-01-28T00:27:18Z2023-01-28T00:27:18Zmoving to new laptop

just a user - going through the exact same thing with my wife's new Mac M2 computer!

I'm sure it has improved over the years, but when I moved her from a Macbook Air to her "current, about to be replaced" Macbook Pro (2015) - it was a mess, as the computers were different - preference issues that didn't match, and so on. Some issues are prevalent to today (her itunes refuses to play more than one album at a time, then stops - I have never been able to figure that out).

As for Moneydance - it's not even located in the "normal" area that Apple recognizes, I'm willing to bet even using the migration concept - it would not be included. I do not know that, but suspect it.

And here we are again - she has a brand spanking new computer - and I'm saying - give me 3 days to move everything by hand - I'm making a "SuperDuper! bootable backup" to just make sure I have everything from her old computer, but I'm reinstalling everything by hand - if anything - I get to look up all the old software codes and enter them into BitWarden for long term keeping.

Almost irrelevant to your post other than concurrent commiseration - I'm doing this (day 1) as we speak - the new mac arrived yesterday. Having a foot of snow dumping on us today makes this easier to pursue - sort of locked into our home for a few days.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/577282022023-01-28T00:30:54Z2023-01-28T00:30:54Zmoving to new laptop

And yes - her MD is secondary - which makes things easier, as I can just reinstall Moneydance and restart a new sync. (Or yes, copy the file over so it isn't a total resync), but both choices are valid.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/577282022023-01-28T00:33:38Z2023-01-28T00:34:19Zmoving to new laptop

I think my major concern is the state change (again) - I've already seen some caveats from Apple (Google it) about moving from an older Macbook Pro to the newer M1/M2 Macbook Pros. They don't seem to have the Migration bit totally thought out between the different processors.

And my spouse would kill me if I do the Macbook Air 2011 ---> Macbook Pro 2015 issues again in a new sense.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/577282022023-01-28T02:58:22Z2023-01-28T02:58:22Zmoving to new laptop

i have been down that road the last time i changed computers - i am really expecting this to be easy - just want to back up my main computer moneydance files before proceeding

v3hansontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/577282022023-01-28T04:44:14Z2023-01-28T04:44:52Zmoving to new laptop

I expect it will be easy - 7 years allows them to perfect it. But I do suggest you google "moving from old macbook pro to m1/m2 macbook pro" just to see the caveats.

And what you suggest is true - I'm backing up her complete system with SuperDuper to insure it goes well (which of course includes moneydance)

dtd
