iCloud Drive sync issue with MacOS 14
I'm currently using version 2023.2 (5007) and it doesn't work well at all with Sonoma. I know Sonoma is a beta and not supported, Just checking to see if you plan on an update when Sonoma is released to the public or some other time. Thanks ! Love Mondydance

Hi Maddy, Can you please tell the community, who are waiting patiently for iCloud sync to work with Sonoma, what efforts are being made to understand what Apple changed and how to adapt to it ? Sometime, as the old saying goes, "We have to go to the Mountain rather than waiting for the Mountain to come to us."
Thanks for all the good work you do !
Ray

Any word from Moneydance if syncing using iCloud has been resolved? Dropbox fixed the spinning beachball of death, but I'm not a fan of Dropbox

Hi All,
Generally the iCloud Sync issue concerning Moneydance 2023 on macOS Sonoma is a matter of a long delay (or hang) when initially syncing a file that has a long history (we can provide corrective steps to help this part of the problem). Subsequent sync updates should work more smoothly.
That being said if the issue persists and you would like us to look into it in more detail, you could create a 'private discussion' here and we will take it from there.
Thank you

Maddy, Can you please define “a long history”. I am assuming that means one has been using MD for many years such that the file is large. However I believe I saw a post some years ago telling one how to ‘prune’ the sync file. If this is the “corrective steps” you reference can you please post instructions here so the community can try it to possibly solve the sync issue as I am sure I am not the only one suffering from this malaise.

Or even better still, could you publish some best practice guidance on how to best set up iCloud sync including any housekeeping or preventative steps that will keep the sync file to a manageable size?
Support Staff 36 Posted by Maddy on 19 Jan, 2024 06:08 PM
Of course, Ray!
1) In order to decrease youe data set size, you could navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox (version 1061).
Launch the Toolbox and select Updated mode (at the top).
Click on MENU: Advance Options and choose: Shrink Dataset size. Set it to 1 day.
You should then carefully follow the on-screen instruction, allowing the disclaimer and restarting Moneydance once the process is complete.
2) For sync using iCloud Drive Sync you need to ensure that:
your computer is running Moneydance 2023.3 (5064) or more generally the software is updated to the latest version.
the data file you wish to sync is stored in the default location on the computer where you set up the process. This is crucial!
Your devices are using the same iCloud account -It is not currently possible to sync to multiple iCloud accounts.
Then you should navigate to File->Syncing and turn sync off by choosing Don't Sync
(if you were using a different sync method previously, and restart Moneydance)
To Sync with the mobile app:
On your mobile device/s you need to install the latest iOS mobile app.
Launch the mobile app and choose the same file as your computer.
Enter your Password to match the Passphrase on your computer.
If you are syncing with another computer (same as above) plus the following:
Navigate to File->New->Open synced file.
Choose the same sync method as the primary computer
Enter the same Passphrase to match
Finally, enter a "dummy"" transaction on each device and allow a few seconds for them to sync. They should display exactly the same transactions.

Maddy, OK I followed your instruction with the exception that I kept 120 days worth of transactions as I have not sync’d with my desktop since Sonoma came out and I am away from home at the moment so cannot re-sync. While it has greatly reduced the time needed to close, sync and backup MD it has returned me to the spinning balls while selecting any and all files or transactions within MD. The spinning ball lasts a few seconds but significantly slows one down when it is on all actions within MD. With iCloud sync turned ‘off ' I do not get these spinning balls. I am currently using a 2020 MacBookAir with 8 GB memory and 500GB available solid state storage and running MacOS Sonoma 14.2.1 and MD 1563 (looking at the Preview file MD ver 1564 has just one very minor change.)
I don’t understand why sync would affect the speed of processing transactions within MD when, as I understand it, sync takes place when I close the file.
So please Maddy where do I go from here.
Ray

I must apologize for the inconvenience, Jonathan.
This thread was closed in error.
If you haven't already, please try upgrading to Moneydance 2023.3 build 5064 from this page?
Also, have you tried reducing the data file size? If not, you could navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox (version 1063).
If the problem persist, please send us your Moneydance error logs and we will take a closer look, for you.
They are saved on your computer as an errlog.txt file.
You can get to your error logs as follow:
1) navigate to Help->Console Window to show the console log in a window
or
2) in the Finder, press ⌘⇧G and then copy and paste
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support
into the field and press enter/return.At that point the finder will show an internal folder containing the errlog.txt file which includes the log.
Finally you can paste the full content to your next reply.

I just received notice on Moneydance of the latest update (Moneydance 2024 build 5115). The changelog included an extensive number of updates, including: "Faster syncing with iCloud Drive due to a new implementation"
FWIW, I tried the new update, and so far, it does seem to have fixed the issues with using iCloud to sync. I am still having a problem with Moneydance being somewhat slow when quitting (I did follow the instructions to reduce the data file size), but it has improved to the point that I can live with the slowness. I will continue to play with the latest update.

Please remember that at this stage Moneydance 2024 is still a Beta release, there are likely to be problems.
Only after we have a stable Moneydance 2024 release will the previews revert to their more common bug fix updates.

Well...after posting that everything was fine with the new update, and after using Moneydance for a bit, I find that I am having the same problems as before: there is a noticeable lag (sometimes with the spinning beach ball, sometimes not) whenever I click on any item. I am going to open a new private thread and send my error logs in the hopes of getting to the root of this problem.
44 Posted by Elaine on 21 Apr, 2024 02:52 PM
I echo nagee's post that there is a noticeable lag with Moneydance 2024 and iCloud Drive sync with Sonoma.
If you are considering upgrading to Moneydance 2024 based primarily on the promise of a faster iCloud sync, I recommend, before paying for it, that you test Moneydance 2024 first during the free period to confirm that the slow sync is acceptable to you.
Unfortunately for me, I bought first before testing it fully.

I'm a fellow user.
With changes Apple have made in Sonoma I suspect there is only so much that Moneydance can do.
Dropbox still remains a viable alternative to iCloud and seems to use a more suitable syncing methodology Moneydance wise.
46 Posted by Elaine on 21 Apr, 2024 04:38 PM
In addition to the lagging issue when using Moneydance with sync to iCloud enabled, I also found that when I opened the drop-down box for “Check No” to amend the “check" for a transaction, the drop-down box remained open and I could not choose an option.
I then selected a different bank account and the drop-down box remained visible.
I then opened settings to disable iCloud sync and the drop-down box remained visible.
Closed Moneydance, removed syncing from my iPhone, re-opened Moneydance and application appears to run as normal.

The drop-down box sounds like you should go to problems and create a new thread describing what you encountered, and calling it something like "Drop-down boxes not closing in 5118" rather than it being buried here and probably not noticed by customer support.
