DropBox sync times

Hii
Any idea how long a file update takes to sync. I set up sync yesterday and it took over 12 minutes for the initial sync! I know its difficult to say but I tend to do my banking little and often - say a dozen transactions or a reconcile each time.
Also, does the dropbox sync include the backups. My MD file is over 60mb. Is it just the changes that are synced or is it the whole file each time? If its the whole file and it will take 12 mins+ each time I shall have to give up as I tend to do my banking and then shutdown!
A very muddled question I know but I hope someone out there can give some pointers.
Cheers

    Hi Tony

Can you clarify if you are using the Moneydance mobile sync mechanism that uses dropbox to sync to your phone/tablet or are you placing your entire Moneydance data file in Dropbox to sync with another desktop installation of Moneydance?

    Hi Ben
Using DBox to sync between 2 macs - I put 'myname.moneydance' in a folder in DBox.
    Hope that helps!

12mins for 60mb seems like a long time, what sort of internet connection do you have?

When you are using Dropbox to sync between two macs the entire files are saved to the Dropbox server and then entire files are downloaded to the other mac. Note that the 'myname.moneydance' file is actually a mac bundle essentially a folder containing a number of files. (If you right click on 'myname.moneydance' and select show package contents you will see what it contains) Only the files that have changed in that bundle will be synced. This bundle contains the check point (backup) files as well as the main file. I expect your main data file is probably 1/6 the size of 'myname.moneydance' and so subsequent syncs will be 6 times as fast - 2 mins or so in your case.

    Hi Ben
Managed to go back to MD11. Why is the 2011 program file so much smaller than the 2013 version. This is why sync takes a long time?

    Hi tonyt,

Why is the 2011 program file so much smaller than the 2013 version.

Both the program file and the data set are larger with MD 2012.

The program file (the installation file) is larger for MD 2012 due to a bundled version of Java that is included with the installation file.

The data set folder is larger because it not only consists of the data file (root.mdinternal) but it also encompasses all of the checkpoint files. Checkpoint files are what used to be considered the backup data files. A data set with a 10MB data file and 5 checkpoint files could easily reach 60MB.

If you look at the root.mdinternal data file of an MD 2012 installation and compare it to the yourfilename.md data file of an MD 2011 installation, you'll see that they are pretty much the same size.

I don't use MD 2012 exclusively or Dropbox so I can not offer any insight on variations to sync times.

    Hi Kevin,
Am I right or am I wrong? If the checkpoints are saved as part of the main data file (STUPID IDEA!) presumably if set to say 5 per day they change as well as the main data file. So as they are changed with different reference numbers, they must have to sync as well???

    Hi tonyt,

It is my understanding that a checkpoint file is created at a rate of one per day with it's creation date appended to the file. If the main data file is opened and closed several times during the day, I would assume that the checkpoint file for that day would need to be recreated to reflect any change(s) made to the data file and subsequently re-synced.

Having checkpoint files created in the same location as the main data file with no means of moving them to a user-defined location has been heatedly argued. It's another reason that I continue to use MD 2011.
