I have been using Moneydance for years without using any tags. I just had a good usage and clicked on
a transaction and found a list of nonsensical values. Where did they come from and how can I clean the tags up?

You can use the Find and Replace extension to search for where any specific tags exist and use the extension to change or remove them.

Hi dwg to the rescue, thanks for your comment. I will check out the
    extension.
Also, do u know how I could have accidentally created so many tags that
seem nonsensical. My worry is that it won't be easy to delete all of them.
    Have a nice evening

Find and Replace along with Batch Change are really the only ways you can work with tags in bulk.

There are limited ways to create tag entries. Manual entry of course is the prime way.

    Importing transactions is another way.

I do not see OFX imports being able to create them, OFX does not support Categories and Tags are an extension of these in a way.

I am not sure about the CSV importers.

QIF certainly does support tags, so that is a possibility.
