I was advised to upgrade in steps.
What is the issue of simply installing the latest version?
Will this create a file compatibility issue?

in general you can upgrade directly from Moneydance 2015 to 2024.

Incremental upgrades may need to be used when you have pre 2015 data files that have a master password set or where a rare problem is encountered, I have seen that happen on only one occasion, so it is advisable to take a backup of your 2015 data set before you start just in case. In all cases you should take a backup before doing any software upgrade.

Some do advise the incremental approach in any case and their in nothing inherently wrong with this approach.

In the case of Moneydance all interim versions are available and you do not need a license to use it to do the upgrade so there are no barriers to using the approach.
