Using MD 5172 on Linux Slackware 15. openjdk version "1.8.0_432"

Sync is turned off, yet every 10 minutes MD creates a new ~/.moneydance/Documents/Personal Finances.moneydance/safe/tiksync/out file.

    Hi ,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Both tiksync/in and out folders contain set of files which represent changes to your data. Whenever you make a change to your data Moneydance will create a small encrypted file in the out folder. When syncing, if syncing is enabled, moneydance will consolidate all files from the out folder since the last sync and push them up to Dropbox, iCloud, or another shared folder you've specified. It will then move that consolidated file to the tiksync/in folder. If you don't sync, then the tiksync/out folder will keep growing, however files older than about 2 months in the tiksync/in and tiksync/out folders will be consolidated (combined and compressed to the tiksync/archive folder).

We are still working on a way to consolidate files in your sync folder (ie dropbox: .moneydancesync//v3/*) which can accumulate quite a lot of files. It is safe to manually delete files which are old enough that all of your devices have had a chance to download them, but we're working on a way to do that automatically. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

You can restart MD, then run toolbox shrink dataset (1 days and yes to purge out) to remove them all.

In order to decrease your data set size, you could navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox (version 1066).

    • Launch the Toolbox and select Updated mode (at the top).

    • Click on MENU: Advance Options and choose: Shrink Dataset size. Set it to 1 day.

You should then carefully follow the on-screen instruction, allowing the disclaimer and restarting Moneydance once the process is complete.

Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

    Thanks to Maddy and Stuart.

I do use the toolbox to shrink the dataset periodically. It lessens the
    annoyingly long shutdown/backup process.

More on point was why are all these 6.0Kib files being created when
nothing is going on? I often leave Moneydance open for no reason except
convenience and these mysterious (to me) files get created every ten
    minutes.

I don't use sync, I use rsync to keep my Windows 10 box and Windows 11
laptop current. Dropbox was a nightmare; probably my fault, recovering
from an error and constantly reloading the corrupted file. I figured it
    out... Anyway.

Thanks for the info and the prompt responses. You can close this
    inquiry if you'd like.

You can use toolbox. Advanced mode. To ‘peek’ at those files. Do one and upload here and I can tell you what it is.

This has nothing to do with MD’s sync system. It’s how it records changes to the dataset.

Stuart, I picked this one at random. See attached.

    Thank you.

Ok. So that’s MD+ polling and updating its license record. It might be as simple as the date/time updating.

I don't use any of the MD+ features - at least that I'm aware of. I
download direct from my bank and import OFX from the credit card company.

If that’s true and assuming you have not activated MD+ then use toolbox. Advanced. Online banking menu. Zap md+ license. This should stop the polling.

Thank you for your time on this.

I have Zapped as instructed and removed all but the last 10 txn files.

I'll leave MD open and see what transpires overnight.
