Hi I just started up with Moneydance but am a previous Quicken user. When I first downloaded the software, I saw all of the pre-set categories for expenses and income (such as "Automotive," "Insurance," etc. However I made some mistakes during my initial import of accounts and had to re-start from the beginning. Now I can't see any of the categories --- anywhere! All that is listed is "Expense" This issue is holding me up, in terms of really getting started with Moneydance.

    Hi Bridget,
Try opening one of your backup data files to see if it contains your Categories.
By default Moneydance creates backup data files in the same folder as your main data file. Backup data files will have the same name as your main data file along with their creation date appended to them. As an example, a backup data file could look something like this: Moneydance.md-2011-01-30.
To open a backup data file rename it without the appended date and then double click on it.. In the above example the file should be renamed: Moneydance.md

Bridget, It sounds like when you started over you didn't select the Standard Account Set when you were asked to "Choose your file type." This option specifies the default set of accounts and categories that will be created. The Standard Account Set includes a complete set of typical income and expense categories. You may want to start over again and choose the Standard Account Type.

    Bridget,

Both Kevin's and Jbnyt's advice is quite sound. I'd also suggest checking out the instructions for transitioning from Quicken, which can be found in the Moneydance 2010 help documentation, which is located here.

I hope the transition is going smoothly for you, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

    Angie Rauscher
