Fidelity Access

If I understand correctly Fidelity is replacing use of direct connect / OFX protocol with a new protocol referred to as "Fidelity Access". From what I can see Moneydance (and Quicken) do not (yet?) support this new protocol.

This is important in that Fidelity has indicated the continued use of MoneyDance then violates their lost funds replacement guarantee due to use of nonapproved 3rd party. Note that their use of term "3rd Party" seems different than infinitekind.

I note that Vanguard has also stopped use of OFX and does not seem to have a replacement intent. Have to use downloads by account.

Can anyone at Moneydance provide current status of this? Will Moneydance be updated to support Fidelity Access?

to down-loaders don't forget to make sure the downloaded filename matches what is in the previous post...
    i got import_fidelity(1).zip for example.

Thanks. So I made another v10 this one should (hopefully) support those workplace retirement accounts that have a different format. Note they don't have the investment symbol listed in the CSV so the security description will have to match

@mmd, I received an error about missing metadata when attempting to install v10. I was able to install v9 without issue.

@jerry did you make sure the filename was importr_fidelity.mxt ? If you have anything else in the name like a (1) you will get a missing metadata file.

@ScottA, I don't know the protocol for adding to MD extension store but Infinite Kind has to sign those extensions directly so somehow would have to add it themselves (i.e., any changes they have to approve and re-sign)

@dtd, I've installed multiple versions without issue, but this was a dummy mistake. I accidentally removed the period when renaming the zip extension to mxt. Somehow I didn't notice until now.

Re “Vanguard has also stopped use of OFX and does not seem to have a replacement intent”,

note that In addition to the manual QFX downloads from the Vanguard web site, Vanguard also supports Plaid and thus Moneydance+.

I know - some people don’t want to use Moneydance+. I held out for as long as I could, but at this point it is tough to imagine being without it. It isn’t Infinite Kind’s fault — and I don’t think you can ask anything further of Vanguard either - Vanguard seems to provide what is now the industry standard set of options (manual QFX and Plaid).

Let’s keep the complaining focused on Fidelity : ). I’m going to start moving stuff away from Fidelity. Fidelity has been great historically, but the reality is they are more replaceable for me than Moneydance is.

The extension is working perfectly for me once I dealt with errors on account numbers. Huge thanks to @mmd, @StuartBesely and everyone else. I've been using MoneyDance for about 20 years now, and can't imagine using anything else. I've not gone to MD+, but this new extension works. I would think Stuart could help get it to "official" status.

    To Moneydance team:
Can we perhaps get a weekly update explaining where this Fidelity fix currently stands? Even if there has been no progress, an update is still helpful because it lets users know the status of the situation.
For me, and I'm sure many others, it's maddening that we're left with "solutions" that force users to "play" IT tech. There's a reason that people purchase software to handle banking data. I appreciate the efforts of many users trying to help but, honestly, this is not helping. I get it, the effort here is intended to be a short term fix but still, it's annoying.
No offense to the fixers, I just want a solution that provides what customers expect and pay for.

@steve - ik/md has never provided weekly, monthly, or any type of periodic updates to issues, other than "I can't use the software at all" issues, and even those are sporadic, but more timely the more people affected.

As to solutions that force users to "play" IT tech and that it is "maddening" and "annoying", that is somewhat insulting (and offensive), as many of us ARE career IT tech and provide our $XXX per hour expertise for free. So our solutions are often just as good, we just can't make them an integral part of the program. Some of the extensions are now considered essential parts of the program (Quote Loader, Toolbox) and some of the extensions HAVE become integrated into the program (Debt Insights, Find & Replace, etc)

Some of us also have banking experience to go with our I/T background, so consider that when you make these "no offense to the fixers" type of declarations.

Also, customers should not consider fixes like this as "expected and paid for" - there has been a state change over the past 2-3 years in that banks no longer want to give you your own data and thus your software has that issue as well. Most software is moving to aggregators, and MD created MD+ as well. That makes your software more expensive.... it wasn't expected and has to be paid for, in some way.

Unfortunately, Fidelity wants a piece of the aggregator pie themselves, so only want you to use Akoya, or Fidelity Access. - or any aggregator who will pay Fidelity to get YOUR data, then provide it to you (for a larger fee). So, no this is not situation normal, expected and paid for, it's a different situation normal.....

@dtd, Chiming in here to say that I agree with @steve's sentiments. I think it's completely reasonable to expect IK to be providing at least monthly updates on this issue, given that they've publicly committed to fixing it.
And the fact that I have immense gratitude for all the volunteers who have contributed add-ons that enhance Moneydance's functionality does not diminish my feeling that, IMHO, IK over-relies on the community to fix things that should (again IMHO) be part of this commercial piece of software. (Example 1: This fidelity importer. Example 2: The need for the community-supplied toolbox to provide core functionally such as moving securities from one account to another.)

Note I did not say that IK shouldn't give updates, I said they never have.
    There is a distinct difference.

Nor did I say anything that disagreed with your second assertion.
I did disagree with "expected and paid for", which is a different statement.... it's more like "unexpected and will require more money from the customer, because MD will have to pay to get this service."

I agree with Steve and LarryCL. I've been using MD for 20+ years after Microsoft Money shutdown. It was either that or go to Quicken and I hate Intuit. When I decided to use MD I knew that they were a smaller outfit and so set my expectations accordingly. Over the years I have been very happy with the software but on the support side I would have to say it comes more from users than from them. MD is not freeware or shareware. It's paid for and MD is a for profit business. As such my expectations for them are no different than any other service I pay for. When I started losing access to direct downloads and MD started rolling out their MD+ option I did not use it and still don't. I refuse to pay any aggregator to get my own data. I would rather suffer the inconvenience of manually entering the data myself than pay for the convenience of letting Plaid access my data to give it back to me. Banking data is relatively easy to import via *.csv with the extensions available so that has lessened the impact other than requiring frequent visits to bank sites to export a file. Importing and dealing with investments has always been problematic via files. In my opinion MD should have been on top of this years ago. They should have spent more time developing a better solution to importing investment files in the past few years because they knew it was coming. They did not do a good job communicating this was coming either. Neither Fidelity nor Schwab will provide the ability to download transactions in any format other the *.csv. I'm sure it's no different for the other investment institutions. No amount of calling and threatening them does any good. My expectation is that there would already be an extension in the MD program setup to import investment files from anyone. I am disappointed that they have spent more of their time worrying about supporting a paid feature than those of us out here who won't pay for that option. I appreciate the efforts of the people out there working a fix for this but I don't use anything unless it's an available extension within the MD software. Once again I'd rather suffer the inconvenience of manually entering the data myself than trust anything unknown with my financial data. MD needs to be a lot more communicative in situations like this and a lot more proactive with solutions.

I agree with mbrown305. I've been a user for years, but lately things have become questionable. It seems to me that 2 or 3 people who are not employees are doing the heavy lifting for Moneydance- answering questions and developing extensions like Quoteloader (still waiting for the MD version to really work). There should be a FAQ box on the help page. It would alleviate the same questions constantly asked here. How many times have I seen "how do I import .csv files?" on this page? The answer should be "click on this link", and the instructions should be simple. They are not. Most people who use MD are not programmers or coders. The instructions are daunting. Quicken, before it broke itself, was an elegant, streamlined application that was very easy to use. I miss things like "how much did i spend on X last year" rather than having to go through detailed income and expense reports to get anything. Yes, you can get there, but not easily. There is a blog page on MD where things like this could be addressed or explained, but they are not. In fact, the last blog entry was a year ago. Again, I agree- MD should be a lot more proactive and informative than it currently is.

Thanks all especially @LizzyBB and @Patrick.

Most of my accounts these days require MD+ so I’ve accepted it reluctantly (my joke to my spouse is that I have an account in every bank, which is only slightly an exaggeration). But for fidelity there’s no aggregator option (yet) and our primary checking is Fidelity CMA so I had no choice but to make the extension with Stuart’s help (I looked at MD alternatives but wasn’t really happy with options).

While I agree or at least sympathize with some of the mild and constructive criticisms above, when I find things about IK/MD that irritate me, I remind myself what I paid for this software. Moneydance is very reasonably priced, especially when you consider that Quicken is now subscription based. For the kind of support that some of the previous commenters would like to be receiving for a paid product, the price would likely need to be higher. I suspect that if it became that kind of product with that level of support, it would then also likely be far less extendable in the way that allowed mmd's fantastic script which became an extension with Stuart Beesley's gracious help. Thank you both for this extension, I'm now using it every day!

While there are things here and there that would be nice to be fixed/improved/added, in general I'm happy with Moneydance's performance and level of support at its price point. And the absolute best thing to me is the fact that its java foundation allows it to be multi-platform. I run it primarily on Linux and occasionally on MacOS. When the Android version is out of beta, I may try it on that too. Back when I used to use Quicken, it was a constant battle to try to keep it running in Wine and it never fully worked. Moneydance runs natively on each platform I use and it works great.

Thank you IK for Moneydance. I just checked my install history and 2026 marks the 20th year since I started using it!

@ Roger Rice That error is normally because of new security having been purchased and is not yet in MD. The extension does not create a new security.

@Roger Rice agreed error is normal. Fidelity includes "No Description" for cash transactions in some cases and this is treated as Xfr which is correct. Rather than checking for this specifically and suppressing the error I just left it as is for simplicity purposes (in my mind simplicity = less possible bugs).

Wow. I'm late to the party, having just realized my Fidelity transaction downloads were silently failing the last 2.5 months, but I'm furious.

I left Vanguard when they stopped supporting transaction downloads and moved my investments to Fidelity. Now Fidelity's doing the same. I expect ensh*ttification from big tech. I guess I was naive not to expect it from big money too.

I'm not waiting for Moneydance to fix this, if they ever do, and am exploring other options.

I see on Bogleheads some folks are switching to Quicken, Tiller, or Actual Budget.

Before I go there, does anyone know of a company besides Fidelity or Vanguard that still supports transaction download in MoneyDance?

@bpdonovan It will make the transactions as Xfr transactions with no security.

You will have to manually add the security first. Then can just delete those Xfr ones and re-import.

So I added share transfers within Fidelity which led to way more of those "No Description" warnings, so I went ahead and suppressed those. This is v11.

    https://github.com/SnapEscalatorCarrousel/import_fidelity

Remember to import into Moneydance has to be named import_fidelity.mxt (or maybe .zip), but definitely NOT import_fidelity (1).mxt or similar as that will fail.

Thanks @Maddy for working on MD+ support.
