Your request has three components. The first is adding the bond
as a new security in the securities detail. You haven't
specifically asked about anything from that part of the process. Is
that part clear?

The 2nd component where some of your specific questions lie is
in entering the transaction. When entering the transaction you
should 1. date the transaction for 2000 2. set the type of
transaction as a buyxfer 3. choose the security by whatever name
you gave the bond 4. set the transfer category as "initial
holdings" to create an account representing assets that predate
your account 5. and set the purchase price at 50

The 3rd component to your task is to update the bond's value.
You can accomplish this from the securities detail. You can alter
the current value of the bond from the history button.

Please let me know if you need guidance with anything that I
have left out,

government. I did not know to select buyxfr rather than plani
ole' buy nor the "initial hodlings". Updating the current
value is apparently manual even through one can enter the earnings
rate MD does not calculate the current value. Is that
correct? I must update it manualy at whatever internal I get
around to. OK... I am going to give that a try. thanks
for the help.

I bought a "series I" savings bond on Jan1, 2000, and then buy
another "series I" savings bond on Jun 1, 2000. While both savings
bonds are the same, that is they are both "Series I", they have
different values today. So if I go into history and adjust the
current value to reflect their value today, it adjusts the current
value for both savings bonds, which is wrong. The bond purchased in
June has less value than the one purchased in Jan. Each purchase is
a separate transaction and shows up as a separate line item in the
register. It would appear that each bond purchased, if the purchase
is in different months, would have to be treated as a unique
security. That does not seem right to me because they both are the
same thing, a "series I" savings bond. That would be like having to
treat individual purchases of McDonald's common stock as a
different security. Suggestions?

Since the names of the securities are only for your own use and
are not being used to automatically update value, you could name
each security individually according to purchase date. For example
you could have "Series I Bond Jan 1 2000" and "Series I Bond June 1
2000".

Alternatively, you can record changes in value by entering
"DivReinvest" (dividend reinvestment) transactions. If you know the
% change the bond has increased in value you can enter that (% *
the current number of shares) as a new transaction with that many
additional shares.

So if you have "1 share" of an I series Bond that has increased
in value by 5%, enter a new "divreinvest" transaction with the
number of shares set to "1*.05" (in Moneydance you can enter
numerical values as equations).

I believe either of those options should be workable.

Best,
