Daily Backups on MAC

Hi
I'm on MD 2017 running under macOS Sierra 10.12.1

I have preferences set to run 'Daily Backups' and specified the directory where I would like them stored. On closing MD I see a dialog flash up saying "Saving Backup" but I can't find them!

They are not in the specified directory, nor in the default location deep in the bowels of OSX

What's going on?
