tracking investment return

I use MD to follow investments. With mutuals no problem: Div reinvest and price change go into the mix to show the return (from what I see - I'm new here). But with CDs it's not the same. Since the price of a CD doesn't change, inputting interest as a div reinvest increases the value but doesn't show up as a return (yield), which stays at 0%. Inputting it as misc income shows total interest on a separate line, but again doesn't calculate as a % return AND doesn't show as being reinvested.

Any way around this so that I can track the return on CDs?

I admit the functionality on CD's are limited. Here is a good discussion on options other user's have worked on there CD's: http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/questions/1087-stumped-by-...

If you can't find a solution there let me know.

I agree - you could do better with CDs and investments in general. I bought Moneydance mostly to track investments, so I might be in a minority. Before moving to Mac, I used MS Money and it worked well for tracking investments.

I chose a different path that involves two transactions for CD interest.

    (1) I enter the interest as MiscInc (under action) and as "interest received" (under category).
    (2) Then I enter another transaction - a "buy" of the same amount of "shares".

This means the "cash balance" is always 0, and that I see a % return and $ amount of income when I click on "Investment Performance". The importance of this is that a can now see my return on total investments, which is what interests me in the long term.
