Pre-populating categories from OFX file on import.
My bank (Smile UK) has no mechanism to download statements in a format for importing. As such I'm having to save them as web html files. Being a bit of a programmer, I've knocked up a script and XSLT transform to turn this HTML file into an OFX file. Its a bit rudimentary, but it works alright.
My problem is that all imported transactions have no category
assigned to them, just given the default. Is there a solution to
this?
Can Moneydance populate categories from data specified in the OFX
file?
Which OFX elements contain this? TRNTYPE didn't appear to get
heeded and doesn't have very exhaustive values.
As an aside, if anyone is interested I the script/xslt, I could look at tidying it up for others to use. Obviously its very specific to the Smile web pages and how they're laid out currently. Let me know.

The OFX file format does not support categories on transactions. As such there is no way to assign the category in the OFX file.
What you should do is manually categorise transactions after they have been imported. The next time you import a transaction that has the same or similar description Moneydance will automatically assign the best matching category. This is done using your existing category assignments as the input to category assignment algorithm.
