separate date in split transactions

I make deposits on a weekly basis and need to record the dates on the checks I'm depositing as opposed to only the date of the deposit. I will deposit multiple checks each week, each check written on a different date all different from the date of deposit. Is it possible to show the date column in the split transactions window?

    Hi

I am afraid It is not possible to show the date on the split transaction window. It is necessary that the date on both sides of a transaction be equal to each other. Given that there is only one date on the left side of a split transaction, that date has to be the same for all splits on the right.

It is standard practice to record the date of the deposit rather than the date on the check when you enter the transaction. If you do not your transactions will not be in agreement with the banks records. This would make reconciliation challenging.

    Sincerely

    Hi Ben,

I am only looking for a place to record the date and check number on the individual transactions within a split and be able to run reports based on those... i want to keep the deposit date the way it is. Does this make sense? I have been using Quicken for about the last 6 years but was unsatisfied with their current release for mac users so I thought I'd give moneydance a whirl. I've been very pleased so far, but this is a must-have for our financial situation.

    Thanks,

    Ashley

    Hi Ashley

I believe your only option for recording this information in the description field in the split transaction in the splits window. You can then search for transactions based on the contents of the description field using the Find function. This is accessed by clicking on the binoculars icon. Although you cannot currently create a report from the search results you will be able to with the next release of Moneydance. MD2010 will be out before the end of 2009 and is a free upgrade to users who bought MD2008.

    Hi Ben,

Thanks so much for responding so quickly! I really do appreciate it! I think I've figured out that the confusion is over my use of terminology. I am only talking about deposits - for instance, if I go to the grocery store and buy dog food and want to classify that differently I totally understand your point. However, if I am depositing multiple checks I need to record the date it was written, the check number, the check writer and the amount. If i include the name, check number, and date in the description field, I can no longer run reports based on the description because they'll be different, correct? And you're saying that will be different in the next release? How are they fixing that?

And, just as a clarification - I've seen lots of responses to threads on this site telling users that solutions are coming in the MD2009 version which was scheduled to be released before end of year 2008... was that actually released or has it been extended now to 2010? If I remember right, the current version available for download is 2008. I'm just trying to figure out when I would actually see a change to this so I can decide if I can wait that long. :)

    Thanks again for your help!

Hi Ashley The find function allows you to search for text within the description field. For example if you have a description that says "CK#123 Bob Smith 1/1/2009" you can search for "Bob Smith" in the description field of Find function and you will get the transaction with the above descriptions and all other transaction that have Bob smith in the description. Moneydance does not have additional fields for recording the check number, date check written and the writer of the check for deposits.

MD 2010 was indeed originally called MD2009 and at one point it was our hope to have it released for the end of 08 beginning of 09. Unfortunately as if often the case with software some things take longer than expected. I am sad that the release has slipped as much as it has. I pinned down the lead developer this morning and asked him what level of certainty I can give users that MD2010 will be out before the end of the year and her said "100%"

    Hi Ben,

What about the possibility of collecting multiple transactions (unsplit) into one deposit instead of trying to split one deposit into several transactions? That would allow for customizing of the date, check number, and name while still allowing the deposit itself to have its own date.

    Hi Ashley

The trouble is that as far as the bank is concerned there is only one transaction for a deposit. I can totally understand that it would be useful to be able to store the information for each deposited check as if it were a single transaction. And this type of transaction grouping would be inconsistent with with how all other transactions in the program are handled. And I cannot think of a clean way in which it could be implemented.

You could enter each check as a separate transaction and ensure that the total of those separate deposits is equal to the single bank deposit. You would then be able to search for individual check information in the usual way. I realise this isn't ideal and I think its is the best I can come up with.

I have a similar situation when it comes to transfers from one bank to another. Let me explain: I generate the transfer from Bank 1 to Bank 2 on Monday, the money is going to be withdrawn immediately, but the money will be available 3 business days later in Bank 2 (Thursday). In the mean time the money is not in Bank 1 nor Bank 2, is there any way to capture different dates for this type of transactions?

    Your help is appreciated.

    Francisco,

You cannot currently have different dates on either side of a transfer transaction. If it it important to you to track these transfers using the different dates I would suggest creating an account called something like "Transfer Limbo" and making the transfer into this account when the money is deducted from one account and then out of the limbo account when it arrives in the second account. This is how I personally deal with my delayed transfers, as when I make a transfer from my PayPal to checking account (which has a 2-4 day delay).

I'm sorry there isn't a more elegant solution, and I'll discuss this with our developer to see if he has any brilliant ideas for Moneydance can deal with this better.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

    Angie,

Thanks for your response, for now I'll keep saving the trx with the date those will appear on the recipient account, at least I'll know when that money will be available.

Hope you find a solution for this in the future, I am sure everybody has the same issue and it causes your cash flow by account to be inaccurate.

    Thanks

    Francisco
