Archiving Transactions
I've graduated from another software package, and imported all of my transactions from the previous software - there is actually years of data!
Is there any way to archive/remove some (specific year or years) of the account transactions to a separate file while still maintaining accurate account balances?

The archive function was removed from Moneydance in 2015 because it would corrupt data.
So it is really not possible without a lot of manual intervention, and with Investment accounts it would likely corrupt data. It is just not worth it.
What is suggested is to mark closed account as Inactive, remove them from the displays.

Hnmm
Can you suggest a way to remove all of a particular year’s transactions
(say 01/01/2015 to /12/2025) from a set of interlinked non investment
accounts while preserving the final account balances?

Hi Ian,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.
Not really. The best approach is to hide the accounts you no longer need.
To achieve this you should navigate to Tools->Accounts and click the account you wish to edit, mark it as “Inactive”, click 'OK' and restart Moneydance to retain the change.
Also, from the Side bar select the account you wish to hide and navigate to Account->Edit Account. You should check the option Hide on Summary page (if balance is zero), click OK and restart Moneydance to retain the change.
A more drastic approach:
You could use the Toolbox to zap/empty your dataset but keep the basic structure, then download your current data directly from the bank's website manually/automatically depending on the method supported by your financial institution.
To achieve this, you should navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox v.1070.
Launch the Toolbox and choose Update mode
Click the MENU: Advanced Options and choose Clone Dataset's structure.
It clones the dataset, keeps the structures, and clears any previous data. It’s safe to use as it creates a new dataset.
Your original data set stays intact.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

You can use the filters at the top of an account to limit what data is shown.
The balances shown in an account is calculated based on any starting balance then running through the transactions adding and deleting the amounts of each transaction.
If you delete transactions you then have to manually change the starting balance.
If you have transfers to/from investment accounts deleting them from bank accounts will impact the investment account as they get deleted from the investment account as well.

Not sure it is related, but is there way to lock older transactions at least?
By mistake, I was review some older transactions and deleted some (I guess I pressed delete and didn't notice). I only noticed after i went back a few minutes later. Luckily I had a TM backup, but it would be nice if those had a password or setting that required a click to edit.

You can'f lock transactions, but making accounts inactive or filtering out older ones makes it harder to run across them.

I am asking because I have a retirement account, of it extends for years, and I can’t really make just the old years inactive since it’s one account all along.
I get what you mean about how filtering out old transactions. It reduces the chance but if I have a typo on date or something that transaction could jump to any time period. I guess that’s the workaround for now.
