change the account type

I'm new-ish to Moneydance. I've setup my accounts, mostly banking, but one account got made as "Asset", and I'd like to change it to "Bank" (so its with the other accounts actually at that bank, and those are "Bank" type accounts in MD).

So far, I've not found a way to change the account type. I've searched Discussions and Knowledge Base, as best I can.
I've tried EDITing the account, and tried Tools> Accounts> (which only is EDIT functionality) -- none of these allow me to change the TYPE of an account.

If this is something that cannot be undone once the account is created, I'm OK with knowing that.
Guidance on this appreciated!

  1. You need to use the super magic toolbox extension, account menu, force change account type.

  2. Hi,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

In order to change account type you can:

Install the Toolbox extension via Extensions->Manage Extensions, and use it to change the definition of the account as follow:

Update Mode->MENU: Accounts and Categories Tools->Fix: Force change Account's Type in the drop list you are offered all the accounts and all the categories included in your data file.

Alternatively, you can create the correct account type as outlined here and use batch change to move the transaction included in the account.

Moneydance contains a feature called "Batch Change", which allows you to make changes to a single transaction, or multiple transactions at once.

Batch Change allows you to make changes to the Description, Date, Check#, Memo, Tags, Account, and Account fields in the register.

For further details about this function, please refer to this article in the Knowledge Base.

When using the Batch Change option, the accounts list will show only accounts containing the same currency as the account you want to move transactions from.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have further questions or need any assistance.

  3. thank you to both of you!!
Stuart - got me headed in correct direction
Maddy - gave me some nice guidance to decide which way to go (extension or create new)...
Because I wanted to learn something new, I decided to try the Toolbox extension.. it worked this time, but I can see why its got all the disclaimers and backups!!
My partner already did the Create New Account and bulk edit - which I assume would be "safer" for the transactions (eg moving from one type to another).

Nonetheless, thank you! I'll monitor for a day or two to see if there are any misbehaviors, but overall I feel good about going forward.
