Two line mode but don't need exchange rate and foreign amount
Sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere but couldn't see it in the manual and a basic search here in the forums didn't seem to reveal it. New to MoneyDance. Came over from Quicken Essentials (i'm free I'm free!). Prefer the two line mode as my transactions often have a memo and a tag ( for later reporting). However I don't need the exchange rate and foreign amount fields/values showing (find the later quite distracting and confusing). Can't see an option to turn that "option" off. Reside in canada and all transactions are in Canadian dollars. Thanks for any pointers

I find that the Rate and Foreign Amount fields are blued out and I cannot enter any information into those boxes.
The Rate and Foreign Amount fields are for those users that deal in mutiple currencies accross the globe. The Moneydance program is "Country Neutral" for true, muti-national, use.

Hi Paul,
Do you have your base currency (chosen when first creating a new file) in a currency other than CAD? That may be causing the issue, as the exchange rate and foreign amount fields should only show up in an account that has a different currency from the base currency. So perhaps when you created a new Moneydance data file, you didn't change the default base currency from USD to CAD.
You can check what your base currency is by going to Tools -> Currencies and it will display your base currency and give you the option to change your base currency.
Please let us know if you need further assistance!

Thank you for the rapid reply.
Can't recall the events that transpired when I created the new file (sorry): I used Moneydance to open my Quicken Essentials file so I don't actually recall having an option to set the currency. My base currency appears to be Canadian but I still have the rate and the foreign (US) amount showing (see screen shot). Not sure what other trickery I have to do to not have them show

Hi Paul,
That's strange. I would suggest trying to change your base currency to a different currency (try anything other than CAD or USD) and then changing it back to CAD to see if that fixes it.
If that doesn't fix it, try creating a new data file in CAD with an account in CAD and see if it still has the foreign currency elements. Depending on the results of this test, we'll consider how best to proceed.

Tried the first suggested fix: went to Aus dollar then back to Canadian: the conversion amounts are still there
So went on to the second suggestion: created a new "test account" file with Canadian dollar as the base amount: any "practice" transaction in this file don't have the conversion amounts on the second line. So not sure why the conversion amounts "persist" in the first file.

Hi Paul,
I spoke with a developer on this issue and there seems to be an issue resulting from the QEM import. Please try the following steps to correct it:
1) Create or open a Moneydance file with the base currency set to "Canadian Dollar"
2) Use the File->Import menu to select the QEM data file (which should have the .quickendata extension, but the extension may not be visible)
3) The base currency and all categories should now be in CAD, and the accounts will be in whatever currency they had in QEM
Afterwards, if you have data that you've entered into your original Moneydance file you should be able to export that data into a QIF file and then import it into your new Moneydance data file. I'd recommend doing this one account at a time and ensure the categories and accounts aren't ending up in the wrong currency.
Please let us know how this works and if we can be of further assistance!

THank you
I will wait a bit to do this. I have been doing dual entry into Moneydance and in to Quicken Essentials in case there were any problems. I will do a reconcile early next month when it comes due for the accounts and then do an export to save me reconciling twice. Thanks

I just started a new credit card account with base currency as Canadian and I'm seeing the grayed out amounts as well. Why? I don't want to see them as it's very distracting. A bug issue? I've attached a screen shot...

Laurie it seems likely that you the currency of the account you show in you screenshot is not the same as the currency of the "Chequing" account or the "personal care" category. Can you go into the account show in the screenshot and select Account->Edit Account and take a screenshot of what you see, then do the same with the "Chequing" account.
Is it possible that you have two currencies with the same name?
