Hello,

In order to work with some classic apps I reverted to OS 10.3.9 from 10.7. Of course MD wil no longer work. I could not find any older versions to download from your web sitle. Is it possible that you might provide me with the latest version that will work with OS 10.3. Also will I be able to import the .md file that was created with version 803, and will my 2011 registration still be valid.

Thank you,

Jerry

Try using OSX 10.5 instead of 10.3.

With OSX 10.5.8, you can still use the classic apps that you are in need of using.

You ought to be able to continue to use release 803 with OSX 10.3.9 and continue to use the same .md data file.

    HI James,

The problem is that I can't install the latest version of java on 10.3, and MD needs java 1.6.0 to work. Only up to 1.4.2 will install on 10.3.
    Will welcome any more suggestions.

Moneydance does not require java 1.6.0.

Moneydance works just fine with java 1.5.

I use the latest release of Moneydance on OSX 10.5.8 for PPC which only has java 1.5 available.

As far as it goes, since it appears you are using an Intel based release of OSX, you could try installing OpenJDK. See link below:

    Hi Jerry,

The only old version that we distribute is the 2010 version, which is located here:

    http://www.moneydance.com/download_2010

However it requires Mac OS X 10.4 and up. If you can install Java 1.5 on OS X 10.3.9, it's possible that it will work.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

About 7 months ago, I downloaded the releases for every platform from 2003 onward. I also have linux .rpm based releases from 1999. I have been trying to hunt down moneydance releases from 1998 thru 2002. They are listed on archive.org under seanreilly.net and moneydance.net but the programs are not there. Just that they were available at some point in time.

There is one drawback: The 2011 .md data file is not compatible with Moneydance prior to 2010. It balks stating that the data file is corrupt.

Thus, jrduke1's only choices are to either downgrade to OSX 10.5.8 in order to use older Mac programs, or try installing OpenJDK6 or 7 on OSX 10.3.

You're correct about java 1.5. l tried installing it on 10.3.9 and it won't install. I did get a MD 2008 build that works on 10.3.9.
The problem is preferences won't open. I guess I can live with that. thanks to all who helped with this.

    Hi Jerry,
Preferences reside in a file named config.dict
You probably have a copy of config.dict left over from a previous install which may not be compatible with MD 2008.
If you can locate config.dict on your machine, try renaming it. Make sure that Moneydance is closed before doing so.
Once it's renamed try opening Moneydance.
    Moneydance should then recreate config.dict
    Try opening Preferences.

    Problem----MD preferences will not open.
I did as you suggested below. The config.dict was recreated, but the bad news is the problem wasn't fixed.
Any other suggestions? The latest java I can use is 1.31 and 1.42 and both were installed by the 10.3 install disks.
I updated the OS to 10.3.9.

    Hi Jerry,
I'm afraid that any other suggestions are beyond the scope of my understanding of 1's and 0's.
I will yield to those more knowledgeable.

As I suggested earlier, since you appear to be using OSX 10.3 for Intel, you can try installaing OpenJDK 6 or 7 onto your system. Or you can go to OSX 10.5 which includes Java 1.5 and still be able to run the older Mac programs.

I haven't been able to find any info on installing JDK 6 or 7 on OS 10.3.9. It seem I need at least 10.4. I'm not sure what you mean
by "using OSX for intel". I'm working with an iMac g5 non intel. I would update if I had the discs, but
the going price isn't worth it.

    Hi Jerry,

The closest thing I can find from a search is a beta release of OpenJDK 7 of OS X 10.5 PPC (not intel). Since it's the only (semi)-official releases I saw for Java 7 on PPC (I actually didn't see one for Java 6), I thought it may be possible that it'd work on an earlier version of OS X.

I don't, however, know if it would work (either installing, not destroying your computer, or even running Moneydance--all unknowns) and, unfortunately, installing it would be at your own risk. However, should you wish to take the risk, here is the link to the project "SoyLatte":

    http://landonf.bikemonkey.org/static/soylatte/

This line refers to the file that might work:
    32-bit OpenJDK 7 Beta 1 for Mac OS X 10.5 PowerPC (Beta Release): openjdk7-macppc-2009-12-16-b4.tar.bz2

Again, I can't endorse this and have not tested it myself--if you choose this route, please proceed with caution and at your own risk as it could very easily destroy your system.

And here is the link to OpenJDK. You want to follow the Darwin/Mac OS X instructions. You will need to install MacPorts first.

But the best thing to do, is to install OSX 10.5.x. You can run Classic Apps under OSX 10.5.x and still have Java 1.5 on your machine.

You ought to be able to obtain a Genuine Apple release of OSX 10.5.x off of E-Bay. You'll want to choose a Full Install release.

As to Intel vs. PowerPC, I was under the impression that OSX 10.7 was not available for PowerPC. That Apple dropped support for PowerPC with the release of 10.6.

Per the following link, the last release of OSX that supported PowerPC was, in fact, 10.5.8. There is no conceivable way for you to have been using OSX 10.7 on an iMac G5 Non-Intel Apple Computer system.

Your original post states that you needed to revert to 10.3.9 from 10.7. 10.7 will not run on an iMac. 10.7 is only available for Intel based Apple Comuter systems.

Beginning with OSX 10.6, the only supported platform is/was Intel based systems.

Therefore, either you are mistaken as to the type of Apple Computer you have, or you are mistaken as to which release of OSX you've been using. And I am prone to believe the latter since OSX 10.3 only supported PowerPC. You had to have been running either OSX 10.4 or 10.5, not 10.7. Thus: You downgraded without needing to since OSX 10.5.x could run Classic Programs as long as you have Classic capability installed. That can only be accomplished through the upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5. I can run Classic Apps on my eMac under 10.5.8 for PowerPC only because I upgraded from 10.4 instead of running a fresh install.

The last release of OSX to support Classic Apps under a fresh install would be 10.4. OSX 10.4 supports Java 1.5.x.

And here is a link to iMac G5. Note latest possible release of OSX supported by this system.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_G5

And here is a link on the run down on the different releases of OSX and what machine type (PowerPC or Intel) that they can run on.
