How do I enter categories without a parent
Just checking out Moneydance. Need to switch from Acemoney, which is no longer being supported. Otherwise I never would have switched. Perfect for my needs. Simple but robust. Have already tried several others, all of which are interesting, none of which is entirely satisfactory.
So, my first question. I've imported my checking account. There are things that are going to have to be fixed. Categories, however, came in pretty clean. Only problem is adding categories that I use that are not used in the file I imported. Specifically, when the category has no subcategories, how do I create it. Categories of this kind that were imported have "Accounts" as the parent category. But when I go to add a category "Accounts" is not offered as an option for the parent category. Nor do I see a way to create a parent category not already the category list.

When you choose the menu item Tools --> Categories and then click on the new button it should ask you the category type you want to create then give a window to enter the details.
By default the parent category that appears should be the root category, which will not appear in the list of available categories which you would select one of if you wanted to create a sub-category

Thanks. The problem was that I had a category selected in the current category list. When that’s the case the root category is not available. However, when you exit categories and restart it the root category will be available when you go to create the first new category.

Ahh yes that will do it, when you start it that way the software assumes you want to create a sub-category, which, to be fair, normally you would.
