Some people like you have had problems jumping several versions. They have better success by updating one version at a time. Download each version and use each in the trial mode to update one at a time.
I’m also moving to a new MacBookPro (my old MacBook is a later 2006 and almost ready give up. When I try to copy my current data file I get an error that it cannot copy it. I can copy my archives but not my current file. Any thoughts?

c_oreltag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/458449732018-08-10T23:08:04Z2018-08-10T23:08:04ZUpgrading

I'm a fellow user.

How are you trying to copy the data, what error are you getting, I don't think anyone will be able to pinpoint the problem without background information, remember we cannot see what you are doing we can only go on what you tell us.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/458449732018-08-14T23:40:22Z2018-08-14T23:40:23ZUpgrading

My apologies for the delayed response. I have had an interesting weekend.

I am trying to copy the Personal Finances.moneydance file (copy and paste) to the desktop of my old laptop so I can (1) transfer it between laptops (one a dinosaur: MacBook late 2006 on OS 10.7.7 and the new one: MacBook Pro 15” mid 2015 running OS 13.13.6) and (2) import it onto the new laptop.

The old Mac runs Moneydance v. 2012.5 (862), while I want to load the newest version on the new laptop.

When I try to copy the file above I get the message: “The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in ‘Personal Finances.moneydance’ can’t be read or written. Error code - 36)”

However I can copy the Personal Finances Archive.moneydance without any issues.

I trust this helps.

I do not like the sound of the error message as it implies an on disk issue.

The data structure of Moneydance 2012 is reasonably simple, so before going down the path of trying to use archive data I think it is worth seeing if the latest data can be recovered.

The folder that contains the Moneydance data must have a .moneydance extension, it appears yours is called Personal Finances.moneydance.

Now within this folder there should be a file called root.mdinternal This file holds the actually data.

If you can manually create a folder called Personal Finances.moneydance and can copy the file root.mdinternal from your old machine and place it in this folder then it should hopefully be usable, unfortunately you cannot run MD2012 on High Sierra - this would be the ideal path to take to upgrade the file through the releases, I would expect it though to crash when you try to open a finder window to select the file with MD2012.

The latest release of MD2017 will open a 2012 file, but on occasions we have seen some issues because of the large jump in versions, hence why it is often recommended to upgrade through the various release incrementally.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/458449732018-08-16T09:28:18Z2018-08-16T09:28:19ZUpgrading

Hey dwg,

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t think Windows translates to OS. The only files I have with MD information are those that I noted earlier.

What do you think about exporting a MD file in XML and try to load it on the new machine. I guess I can also download MD2012 to the new laptop and upgrade it one version at s time.

...Carlos

c_oreltag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/458449732018-08-16T10:48:04Z2018-08-16T10:48:04ZUpgrading

I actually meant translate Windows terminology into Mac terminology.

Personal Finances.moneydance is a folder it is not a file. On Mac I believe it is referred to as being a bundle and looks like a single file, but there must be a way of looking inside of it, because inside you should find multiple files and also a couple of sub folders which contain more files.

As I said I expect MD2012 would crash on High Sierra whenever you tried to select a file using the File chooser, due to changes Apple have made.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/458449732018-08-16T11:02:49Z2018-08-16T11:02:49ZUpgrading

BTW backup files are just zip files so your favour zip program should be able to unpack it, I believe some programs want their to be a zip extension to the file before it will open them however.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/458449732018-08-17T11:41:28Z2018-08-17T11:41:29ZUpgrading

Thanks dwg.
