(Running Windows 10)

When I go to help > show archive folder and help > show documents folder, they point to .moneydance under my user folder. I don't see any way to change these settings.

I want to use the normal documents library that every other Windows application uses in order to simplify disk backups.

When I set up a new file or data set or whatever MD calls it, I am not asked where to put the file, so it lands in .moneydance.

I thought I read somewhere that I actually do have a choice in where MD data is stored but maybe I imagined it or maybe I'm missing something.

Any insights would be appreciated.

William Btag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/462442492018-10-11T18:47:30Z2018-10-11T18:47:30ZCan I do anything about MD's fixation on .moneydance directory in user folder? (Running Windows 10)

Hi William,

Take a look at this Moneydance KB article related to moving data files.
http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/file-locations-and-changes/moving-f...

As you are aware, the Moneydance library is in the .moneydance folder in your user root directory. Be aware that the file extension for data files is also .moneydance (which I think can be dangerously confusing)

After moving your data file, when you go to open Moneydance, you will probably be greeted by the Welcome screen. You will likely need to use the 'Open Other' option to navigate to the new location of your data file.

Going forward, Moneydance will remember the new data file as the default. However, moving your data file will not change the behavior of the two menu items that you mentioned.

(Running Windows 10)

Oh, this hurts to learn right AFTER I did a fresh reinstall of Win10, only to find to my horror that the "folder" containing my MD data had never been backed up into my Google Drive. Why? Because I tacitly assumed everything still lived under the (custom) folder where I'd kept everything related to Moneydance since 2006!

Little did I realize that the recent "conversion" process MD asked me to perform involved orphaning my old .MD files, and secretly placing everything off into its own little cache somewhere else.

As a lifelong Windows user, I can say even an expert would not normally associate a dotted folder name (e.g. .moneydance) with important data needing to be backed up.

Woe betide anyone unaware of this, who is simply backing up only the folders he knows about! I believe MD could have done a far better job of this "conversion", including perhaps placing the so-called .moneydance subfolder directly under the old folder structure where the original .md file(s) lived.

Timothy Garrett
