I have a check printing program that uses the printed checks information from quicken. In quicken I print checks to a "generic-text" printer that makes a .prn file. This program just adds the specific check info from the .prn file to the rest of my check info like account and bank etc and formats to print on blank checks. Then I just print on my lazer printer that has a MRCI cartridge. Has worked fine for years. Hope will work with Moneydance too. When I print checks to the generic-text printer it makes a .prn file that is empty?

Is there a way to make a .prn file like the one quicken makes?

    just a user,

You can calibrate to print to blank check stock directly from MD. But if you want to print from a file, I would recommend using a PDF printer device like PDF complete. I think that would be more accurate than creating a text printer. The after creating the PDF file, you could print to your printer.

mhoggie,Thank you for the quick relpy!

I am learning all the time and enjoying the change from Quicken to
    Moneydance.

But a .pdf will not work for this software. The Checkmagic program I have
been using gets it's information from a .prn file to print complete checks.
It has worked fantastically for me for many years.

To use it I just choose the generic-text option in my list of installed
printers when I printed checks in Quicken. That program looks for the.prn
file that it produces and uses it to print my checks.

Will Moneydance print the check data - date, amount, payee, address and memo
    to a .prn file?

The bank name and address, routing and account numbers, etc. are formatted in the checkmagic software and are combined with the .prn information to print out the check completely on totally blank check stock. Why I use MIRC toner.

If this can not be done I think I can print my own blank pre-numbered checks in
checkmagic first. And then use Moneydance print check to print
the individual check info on them. But would prefer to do it all at once as I have been if
    possible.

    Thank you, Roy

    just a user,

I see your issue, you have the software and special ink to create the check stock and the software just needs the check info. Here is a link to creating a PRN file on windows. (You might need to change the suffix to .prn , I think windows adds a "file" suffix. But not sure.

Wow your responses are quick. Thank you.

For quicken I used the windows "generic text" printer set to print to file to create the .prn files. And that worked fine. But when using the same with Moneydance it creates a .prn file but it is empty. For some reason when Moneydance prints the checks to that selection in my printer list it does not include the individual check data like Quicken does?  Maybe Moneydance can not print to the generic text option windows has a driver for.

I might get use to printing a few blank numbered check ahead as if I prichased them. And then just use the check print checks function in Moneydance to fill in the rest of the info like it was designed to. Roy
