How do I get the welcome screen with "Open Other" to show up?

I'm on OS X 10.6.8. I purchased Moneydance direct (not through the App Store).

I have more than one computer and more than one Moneydance file.

On computer 1 I followed the instructions to move the Moneydance file to another location. I put it in a Dropbox folder (just as a shared item; NOT setting up sync with iDevice). I can access it from Computer 1 just fine.

Now I go to computer 2. I see the Moneydance file in my Dropbox folder. I already have other Moneydance files on this computer. I can't figure out how to open the Moneydance file in my Dropbox folder. Double-clicking opens Moneydance, but not my file. If I just click on the Moneydance icon, it opens with my last data file. The File > Open menu shows various Moneydance files I have, but there's no "Open..." command that lets me choose a Moneydance file.

All I need to do is get the "Welcome" screen to appear, but I can't figure out how to do that. My only thought is to delete my other Moneydance files so it will be forced to show the "Welcome" screen? That doesn't seem too friendly.

Please tell me how I can get the Welcome screen with "Open Other" to appear when I already have existing data files.

I'm realizing my problem is that I don't have the newest version of Moneydance. I had 2012 (825) installed. The Moneydance updater didn't update me to the latest version. I uninstalled and downloaded the new version and I see the menu you are talking about now.

Now that I have the latest version of Moneydance and the menu option, I find that it doesn't work. Whenever I Open Other and navigate to a ".moneydance" file, the file name is always dimmed and not selectable. I've had a problem where sometimes the file shows as a folder and other times it shows as a Moneydance file. I flipped the bundle bit to make it back into a Moneydance file. It didn't matter...I couldn't open either of them from "Open Other".

What I did find out is that in the latest version of Moneydance I can double click (when the bundle bit is set) and the file opens in Moneydance. So fortunately, I got it to work.

I'm glad that you've found a way to open your file. Does Moneydance remember this files location after you open it, or do you have to find it and double click on it each time? If you right click on the file, can you confirm that it is associated with Moneydance? Sometimes this causes Moneydance data files to appear greyed out in the Open window.

Moneydance remembers the file on the File > Open menu. I can open it from here or by double-clicking the file in the Finder.

Moneydance still does not allow me to select it from "Open Other" off the welcome screen. However, when I look at it, the file is associated with Moneydance. It also has the Moneydance icon now instead of the folder icon. I don't know how the file lost its bundle bit in the first place. I haven't been using Moneydance very long, but I think I've seen some test Moneydance files sometimes show up as a folder and sometimes as an icon. I'd have to play around more to see if I could figure out anything.

If the file is already visible under File > Open will that make it so I can't select it from "Open Other" because Moneydance already knows about it? Or should I still be able to select it via "Open Other"?

    Hi Michael,

Are you trying to open another .md file or a .moneydance data set?

    It's a .moneydance file/data set.

    Hi,
Could you try and make sure that this file has the correct file association set for it?
To do so, go to the bundle and ctrl-click on it and select 'Get Info'. Then under the 'Open With' section of the window that comes up can you make sure that it is associated with the latest version of Moneydance 2012.
If those changes needed to be changed and after you change them does it function appropriately?
    Sincerely,

Yes, it is associated properly and double-clicking works. However, "Open Other" cannot open it. In the Open Other dialog, it even shows up with the moneydance icon.

    Hi Michael,

If you drag and drop the .moneydance data set onto Moneydance, does it open then?

.moneydance file with bundle bit set:
    It has the Moneydance icon.
Dragging the data file onto the Moneydance application icon in Applications works.
Dragging the data file onto an open Moneydance window with a different data file open does not open the data file I dropped on the Moneydance window.
Double-clicking on the data file in the Finder with Moneydance not running starts Moneydance and opens the data file I double-clicked.
Double-clicking on the data file in the Finder with Moneydance runnning with a different data file open opens the data file i double-clicked.
I cannot select this file with the "Open Other..." button.

I have another .moneydance data file that shows up as a folder instead of a bundle.
    It has a folder icon.
    Double-clicking on it does nothing.
I cannot drag and drop it onto the Moneydance icon in Application.
The Moneydance File > Open menu knows about it and I can open it from there just fine.
Also, I can navigate to this folder from the "Open Other..." button and open it.

    Hi,
This really is odd, I am sorry for all the bother. So I have an idea that did crack one other tough case that was somewhat similar to this problem that we could try.
When you do have this problem file open in Moneydance, go to File->Export and export it into Moneydance 2010 format.
Make sure to give it a distinct name that is somewhat different from the current files name.
Now, go to the welcome screen, select open other, and navigate to the exported .md file. Does it open correctly? Once you convert it to 2012 format does the file you brought in function correctly?
    I hope this fixes it.
    Sincerely,

    Things are pretty strange here.

When I exported to the 2010 .md format, the file was associated with TextWrangler. I changed the association to Moneydance and I could double-click on it to get it to open, but I could not select it from Open Other.

For fun, I decided to look in the documents folder (Help > Show Documents Folder). What I found there is that all my Moneydance data there just shows up as folders; it does not show up as a bundle being associated with Moneydance. I can easily open any of these with the Open Other command. However, if I put a file there that's associated with Moneydance, I cannot open it with Open Other.

So it seems if a file is a associated with Moneydance I can double-click on it and drag it to the Moneydance.app icon and it works fine, but I can't open it from Open Other.

On the other hand, if it just shows up as a file folder, Open Other works, but double-click and drag and drop do not work.

    Any other ideas?

I take some of that back. If Moneydance shows as a folder, only sometimes can I open it from Open Other. Sometimes it doesn't work at all.

    Hi Michael,
Well I'm not sure if I can quiet figure it out. But seeing as you can get it from File -> Open Recent would you feel okay with us calling this case closed (sort of)?

I can get files to open that aren't on the File > Open menu by setting the bundle bit, so I'm not stuck.

    It's sure strange behavior, though.

I don't know how the bundle bit is getting lost and I don't know what lets the Open Other dialog be able to select a file. It might be something strange with your new file format. I never really played with Moneydance too much prior to the 2012 version to notice if there were any problems. Now I bought it because it's good for taking care of some needs. I still have something in Quicken Mac 2006 that I'd like to get converted to Moneydance some day. I tried once and it's going to be a bit of work to convert and I don't have time now. At least I'm getting more familiar with the app now on a different set of accounts.

    Hi Michael,

That is strange that the bundle bit isn't getting set. In any of the folders/bundles where the bundle bit isn't set, can you go into the folder and open the root.mdinternal file with Moneydance?

    I can't open root.mdinternal.

I can sometimes open the <folder name>.moneydance file.

Also note: if I create a new Moneydance file, the bundle bit isn't set. Is something wrong where Moneydance isn't properly setting the attributes?

I'm on 10.6.8. I don't know if anything's different on a later version of the OS.

    Hi Michael,

I apologize if we've already asked this and I missed it, but can you send us the first six lines of your console output? This can be found by going to Help -> Console window in Moneydance.
