file? Just want to make sure that file is safe.

If the old 2018 transactions are in a different physical file, they will still be associated with the account name in that physical file.

That was one advantage of how I decided to do it this way... I can jerk the NEW file around a bit with changes and additions but still have the old files saved as they were at the end of the year.

PAPtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/467567952019-03-27T15:34:16Z2019-03-27T15:34:17Zstarting a new calendar year

Thank you - just had to be sure. That is exactly what I want.

Julie

JulieHtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/467567952019-03-27T16:37:59Z2019-03-27T16:38:00Zstarting a new calendar year

Still having problems. Loaded 2018 from backup and when I delete the
old transactions before changing the account names the links to the
categories no longer work.
What am I doing wrong?

Looks like I will have to keep one old year of transactions in order to
keep the links. Just hide the accounts. Hope that works because I
really don't
want all my transactions from past years in one file. Bound to be more
complicated and some accounts should be deleted as I changed banks
anyway.

Please forward my concerns to MoneyDance - would be great if the links
would restore like Quicken - once the transactions are deleted the
links go away.

When you delete a transaction, it disappears from the debit account and the credit account. There is nothing to associate with a category but the the categories are all still there.

PAPtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/467567952019-03-27T17:26:02Z2019-03-27T17:26:02Zstarting a new calendar year

When I type the name of the check payee if I type part of the name it
fills out the rest including the associated category.
That is what no longer works. I would have to set up all my payees
again which is what I don't want to do. If I leave the old
accounts thereand remove them from the display, then the entry of
partial names and categories still work.

One other problem - I created the new 2019 file and keep trying to
restore from backup but it changes the name of the file to the old
name with a version number - am up to version 12. Wont import into my
2019 file??? and I have tried and tried. Should I restore
another way?

That's not actually something you can set up or link to... when you start typing, the program tries to predict what you are doing based on what you have done before. So yes... if you want it to guess what you are typing, you need some old transactions.

For the second issue:
When you restore from the backup... your new file becomes a restored version of the old file. Just go into the folder and rename the physical file to whatever you want.

PAPtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/467567952019-03-27T18:35:32Z2019-03-27T18:35:35Zstarting a new calendar year

PS... I was on the phone an failed to bloviate.

For me, it just as easy to type the payees and pick a category once time every year to keep the files clean and current. It will be guessing what you entered last anyway so you are doing it once and similar payees are gone.

For the second issue, you can also export a backup but name it 2019, create your new file and restore the one already named 2019.

PAPtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/467567952019-03-28T02:19:40Z2019-03-28T02:19:41Zstarting a new calendar year

Changing the file name worked and now I think I am ok.

Thank you for all your help.
