I installed the 2019 version of Moneydance. Upon exiting the problem, the backup file was created as usual. When I looked at the file, I noticed that it was half the size as the previous one.
Is version 2019 simply more efficient in how it stores the data? If so, this is pleasant by-product to upgrading.

I am not support staff, just a user.

2019 reduces the size of the internal archive by compressing and consolidating the internal change-log files which reduces the size of the overall data set but (more importantly) vastly reduces the number of change-log files that it needs to scan at launch and shutdown. This also reduces the size of the backup file.
Also, a file buffer has been added when saving a backup to improve performance, especially on non-local drive".

my MD 2019 only accesses old files ending in 2017. how do I get it to find the most recent file, including 2018?
