Fair warning time. Before starting on this take a full back of your data, make a little mistake doing this and you can end of with a pile of garbage.

Read the warning again :)

Open up your categories: Menu Item Tools --> Categories

Scroll down to you get to the categories you want to change.

I would suggest you rename the one with the most transactions in it to the name you want to keep (Right click: Edit)

Now select one of the categories you want to remove right click and choose Open in a new window, this should give you a familiar looking register.

Select all transactions and right click and select Batch change: ACCOUNT (yes I said account) Select the Category you are keeping (Misc A) and proceed to make the change.

Perform the same action with the other categories.

Go back to the category you are keeping and make sure all transactions are these.

The other categories should now be empty and you can delete them.

You can read about batch change at:

So I went below the “Please reply above this line”…and responded to specific info you gave me…

Where you say “Select all transactions and right click and select Batch change: ACCOUNT (yes I said account) Select the Category you are keeping (Misc A) and proceed to make the change.”

Is this a cut and paste operation OR will this Batch change do it for me…???

Just want to make certain I understand…

Many thanks…

People think they will do a batch change category but what that does is complete stuff up your transactions - get the backups out.

You can see earlier that you went into Categories (Tool --> Categories) and you are working in there.

A Category is actually a special type of account and when you have a category register open you are in a category account so you wanting to move transactions from one category account to another category account, hence the batch command to move Account.

To explain what would happening if you select to batch change category, say envisage that all transactions in the Misc 2 category came from various bank and credit card accounts, if you select batch change category while you are in the category register and select Misc A, all of these transactions in the various bank and credit card account would be moved to Misc A. So each transaction on one side would be in Misc A and the other side in Misc 2 with none of these transactions in any account. You have stuffed up your data pretty badly.

You can see why I say to take a backup before you start.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/470368192019-03-08T22:57:04Z2019-03-08T22:57:05Zmoving catagories

Working perfectly…
