If I understand you correctly...

It has been my experience that once I've changed the Date sort order of a register, the next time that I access that register, Moneydance will open it to the newest date regardless of the Date sort order.

If you need to quickly move from the first transaction in a register to the last, highlight the first transaction and tap the END key on your keyboard.
If you need to quickly move from the last transaction in a register to the first, highlight the last transaction and tap the HOME key on your keyboard.

Can you confirm that the 'All' filter is applied to the register.
Filter buttons reside along the top of the register.

Are you able to generate any reports that contain data from within the missing time frame (post 8/12/2013)?
If so, it may be an indication that the data is still present but the data is somehow being obscured.

If you are unable to generate a report showing data from the missing time frame, try the following...

From the Moneydance menu bar, go to File > Open.
(for Macs, it may be Moneydance > Open)
See if another data file is listed there which may contain the missing data.

Or...

From the Moneydance menu bar, go to File > Restore from Backup...
(for Macs, it may be Moneydance > Restore from Backups...)
