It is not clear to me how you are processing transactions.

When you import a download, the new transactions should have a large blue circle next to them and all be be assigned to you default category of the account, which by default is the first category in the list - Automotive. You could change this to something like Uncategorized if you wanted to.

You then need to go through the confirmation process. When you go through this process you assign the transaction to the correct category, assign it as a transfer, or perhaps even merge it with an existing transaction. It is not clear to me if you have followed this process, which is discussed in the article:

The problem being that when the statements are imported all the balances are are correct. I was hoping there is a way to not let the transfers that i confirm affect my end balances because in actual fact everything is balanced when it is initially imported.....

Nick Sayerstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/472489822019-05-09T21:37:07Z2019-05-09T21:37:07ZBalance of banks accounts incorrect due to automatically put as 'Automotive'

I do not know what you mean by "transfers to transfers" Confirming transactions should not affect the balance in itself. Some screen shots that highlight the problem may well helps others to see what is happening.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/472489822019-05-10T10:49:24Z2019-05-10T10:49:25ZBalance of banks accounts incorrect due to automatically put as 'Automotive'

Hi I have attached some screenshots of the problem... Whilst doing this I have noticed that the transaction is duplicated so there is one as 'Automotive' and one shown as a transfer. Is this normal? Do you just have to delete the 'automotive' transaction?

Nick Sayerstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/472489822019-05-10T10:56:49Z2019-05-10T10:56:51ZBalance of banks accounts incorrect due to automatically put as 'Automotive'

In the text in my last post I mean that there are two entries in the account that the transfer was to... One as a transfer and one as Automotive. I was assuming that the system would work out that the two transactions were connected.

Nick Sayerstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/472489822019-05-10T12:12:42Z2019-05-10T12:12:42ZBalance of banks accounts incorrect due to automatically put as 'Automotive'

I cannot read the pages file but I can read the DOCX file.

What you are seeing in the DOCX fil is exactly what I expect to happen.

You are downloading two files and import them into their respective Accounts in Moneydance. The transactions and amounts are correct but as is expected there is no category information so the default category is used (Banks I would not expect to get the category information to be correct even if they did try) So at this stage the numbers are correct. When you change a category to reflect a transfer, Moneydance creates the appropriate entry in the other account and hence the balance changes.

You say there is an entry in the other account which is really the other side of the transfer, I would expect this, but there is insufficient information in the transaction for Moneydance to be able to link them with 100% certainty hence you end up with two transactions in one account.

This is totally predicable and is expect to happen.

As you surmise one method of dealing with it is to delete the extra transaction, this is ok if it is a QIF download but if it is a OFX/QFX you are better off to merge the transactions.

There is a less orthodox approach you can try if this does not suit you. Create a category called something like "Transfers" and in each account assign the transaction to this category. The net balance of the transfers category should always be 0 after both accounts are attended to and you should have your transaction in each account - it just will not be a true transfer transaction from a Moneydance perspective.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/472489822019-05-10T12:21:37Z2019-05-10T12:21:38ZBalance of banks accounts incorrect due to automatically put as 'Automotive'

Thank you so much for your help! By merge the transactions do you mean merging the automative, and the transfer transaction in the other account?

If you are downloading OFX files these have a transaction ID by merging it keeps these IDs and that is what prevents downloading the same transaction again as the IDs should be unique and Moneydance can use them for transaction matching.

If you are using QIF files it does not matter as they do not have and IDs and the best way of avoiding duplicates is to download a specific date range each time that does not overlap with what has been downloaded before.

dwg
