It is my understanding that newer versions of Moneydance eventually compress older transaction data thus reducing the overall size of the set of data files.

I have some older transactions dating back to 1986. Data consists of 4 bank accounts, 6 credit cards, 6 investment accounts and 5 Asset accounts. My data file is just over 35MB. MD 2019.3 (1876) - the current Preview build.

Just in case you are considering deleting older transactions... Realize that Moneydance uses a journal system. Deleting older transactions may, in fact, increase the overall size of the data file due to the added journal entries of deleting the transactions.

Thanks for the info.
My data set is a similar structure but the folder containing 'safe',
'tmp' and 'key' is 46.6 MB. My concern is not disk space as much as maintaining the integrity of the
data set, hopefully it remains ok.

Q. Are you syncing with any of your other computers?

I've experienced some size reduction in the data file after setting up syncing. I'm not sure if it was a fluke or not. I have not seen any official statement on the matter. It might be worth a try.

Safe computing 101 dictates that you make sure to have a copy or working backup of your data file before making any major changes.
