I'll have a go at answer your first question.

The short answer is it is not possible to create a new file based on the previous one and have a smaller file. Moneydance writes data using journaling techniques, so when you do an activity like changing data or deleting data the software does not change what is in the file instead it writes a new record that has the change so a history is built up over time. This method does have advantages, it is a better for the syncing that Moneydance does between different machines, it could also be used advantageously if they ever want to introduce a rollback feature. So as a user if you have a copy of the data and remove transactions the size of the file will increase.

Would it be possible to do what you want? yes I believe so but it would need to be done programmatically, probably through an extension that can create a new data set with the needed data.

To have a "Save As" function in Moneydance would effectively be a big copy operation, the trunk file and the incremental transaction files would all need to be copied and all attachments that have been saved in Moneydance also need to be copied, it is not like a spreadsheet or a document where you have a single named file. Also if syncing you would need to disable the syncing function on the copied data set. You can achieve a "Save As" in Moneydance by performing a Moneydnace backup of you data set then doing a restore and finally renaming the dataset using your operating system tools, The backup/restore operation turns any syncing off as well as placing all of the data in a new data set.

In relation to your download issue, are you using automatic or manual downloads, if manual what file format are you downloading?

dwg
