Hi htesler

Make sure both computers are running the same build. Update your old computer to the latest build if required.

You can use Dropbox to transfer your data set, but a memory stick would be a lot faster. What you must not do is keep your active data set in Dropbox. Your data set must run from your hard drive.

To copy your data set to a new computer, proceed as follows.

On your existing computer click on HELP (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. This will open a file explorer in the default data set location.
Close Moneydance. Your data set is a folder not a file containing other files and folder. I think it’s called a bundle on a Mac. The naming convention for the data set is yourdatasetname.moneydance. Copy this folder.

Open Moneydance on your new computer. Assuming this is the first time you have opened it; it should open in the welcome window .Click “Create a new account set” and set up a dummy account so you can then click HELP (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER.
If you already have a data set, set up on your new computer then click HELP (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER.
This will open a file explorer in the default data set location. Close Moneydance. Paste your data set is to this location.
Open Moneydance then FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – OPEN, your data set should be listed.

Use the same key to register Moneydance.

To ensure auto backup is working under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) - PREFERENCES – BACKUPS. From time to time check new backups are being created. The backup location can be in Dropbox,

If you want to sync data between your new and old computer see https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479675982020-01-05T16:42:07Z2020-01-05T16:42:07ZMoving Date from old mac to new macbook pro

Thank you.
Do you also have to transfer the contents of the backup folder?

hteslertag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479675982020-01-05T16:52:17Z2020-01-05T16:52:17ZMoving Date from old mac to new macbook pro

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi htesler

You can if you want, but I would suggest you set up auto backup under PREFERENCE - BACKUP to use Dropbox in case your hard drive crashes. Also when you use EXPORT BACKUP use Dropbox. If you do set up syncing to your old computer make sure you set up a separate backup location in Dropbox for that.

Hope this helps

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479675982020-01-05T21:21:23Z2020-01-05T21:21:23ZMoving Date from old mac to new macbook pro

Thanks it worked well. I have three files and changed the backup locations to a dropbox folder. You cautioned to have a separate dropbox folder independent of the backup folder for syncs. And I sync all three files to that separate folder or do I need a separate folder for each sync file.

Another question, can you have more than one file work with the mobile app?

Thanks for your help

Hi htesler

As each of the three data sets has a different name so you can back them up to the same folder in Dropbox.

If you are using Moneydance’s internal sync engine to sync data sets between computers then you should have two Dropbox backup folders one for your primary computer, syncing set up under MONEYDANCE – SYNCING and your secondary computer set up under MONEYDANCE – NEW.

If you have more than one data set synced then to switch between data set on a mobile App you need to DISCONNECT under SETTINGS. After a short delay you should then see a list of your synced data set names, select one and enter its passphrase etc to sync.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479675982020-01-05T21:58:06Z2020-01-05T21:58:06ZMoving Date from old mac to new macbook pro

I understand that the backup folder in Dropbox can have multiple datasets in it since they have unique names. Why does each computer have to have a separate backup folder. I assume that their data should be in sync because of the sync folder.

My question was whether the sync folder can have more than one dataset in them or does each file have to have a separate sync folder.

There are a number of reasons for having a separate backup for for each machine. Machines can be used at different times during the day and the auto backup is geared to create a backup on exit but Moneydance by default will only have one backup for the day. By having separate backup folders you potentially have more than one data set for a day to recover from in need.

For those that are in and out of Moneydance during the day and wants to keep every backup a user has created an extension that ensures that each backup created is kept rather than overwritten.

If you have one shared backup folder I believe there could be the potentially for data corruption if both machines tried to write a backup at the same time.

If you are talking about the .moneydancesync folder in Dropbox. This is used as a container for all synced data set each of which will have its own syncing folder within this folder, so the possibility of syncing multiple data sets has been allowed for.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479675982020-01-05T22:27:00Z2020-01-05T22:27:00ZMoving Date from old mac to new macbook pro

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi htesler

A primary and secondary data set are not exactly the same. You can’t change the syncing method when running a secondary data set. This is true of a restored backup from a secondary data set. As the primary and secondary data sets have the same name their automatic backups within the same day also have the same name. One will overwrite the other. So, for example if the last computer to shut down in a given day was the secondary computer and you tried to restore from this backup on your primary computer it would appear to work until you tried to change the syncing method. It would be greyed out and stuck at Don’t Sync. There is a python script you can run to convert a secondary data set to a primary data set, but with separate backup folders this can be avoided.

There is only one sync folder set up automatically in Dropbox when moneydance uses its sync engine. The folder is “.moneydancesync”. A hidden folder within Mac.
For each data set you sync you will find an alphanumeric folder created within “.moneydancesync”. Within each of these folders is s text file called mdsyncinfo.txt Open this file in a text editor to see the name of the related data set.

How to set up syncing, see https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data

Hope this helps.

derekkent23
